What does he gain from doing so though? It's hard to imagine the public would lose any more sleep about a SPAD being sacked than they would Ferguson being ousted. Indeed, he'd probably gain in the polls by getting rid of someone disposable to show that his government are on the side of the people. Instead, he's sacrificed his standing in the polls for a SPAD. The question is, why?

Everyone has been putting politics to one side and adhering to specific instructions. What’s happened here is that a senior official has not and then the PM has just lied to us all. We’re in unprecedented territory here.

It's not just the PM though is it? The whole cabinet seem to have come out in support for someone who is democratically irrelevant.
