Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

So 1000's of those deaths are down to worrying are they, that's the type of thing I'd expect a Tory MP to be rolling out as an excuse.

Up until the 15th of April, OAP's who had beaten the virus were being returned to care homes with no test to check if they had it, the Govt were basically throwing Covid hand grenades into those care homes, the most vulnerable in our society to dying from this virus and that's what they did.

And the care homes who said we are not accepting anybody back without being tested to make sure they haven't got it, they knew the dangers, were threatened with having their funding stopped unless they accepted the residents back.

Have you had a relation who had lost their spouse and struggled to cope thereafter? I used to spend all day every Saturday keeping my nan company and doing the odd jobs needed to be done around the house, but after I got a family of my own this was impossible to keep up. The only thing that kept her going was going to the shops, restaurants and church to meet and talk with people. I know for a fact that this situation would have finished her off if she hadn't already passed away 18 months ago.

So you can think what you want re excuses but I'm pretty sure that there are thousands in that similar situation.

This is remarkably po-faced.

For a start he has never said his home is on Anglesey; at his election he told his constituents it was in the constituency, in fact prior to this he’s never told anyone that he lives there as far as I can see (as opposed saying he goes on holiday there most years, and saying he is getting rent off three properties on the island).

Secondly yes, people shouldn’t automatically believe what they read on the internet, but that applies to the statement from his MP chum as much as anything else given their serial mendacity, and the implausibility of living there given what and where his job is.

It doesn’t matter where his primary residence is, so I’m not sure why you keep going back to it. People were kicking off because they thought he had breached lockdown, and assuming he’s been living there since February and not left the island since the Lockdown was announced he’s done nothing wrong.

Whether Anglesey is or isn’t his primary residence is irrelevant to the issue which was raised and he was slated for. It’s not illegal to live in a second home assuming you’ve been based there since February.

No regrets for sharing fake news? You were rubbing your hands with glee while this poor fellas family were going through hell and having their reputation damaged by false allegations having just recovered from a serious illness. Aren't the left wonderful? Not as bad as Tom Watson yet, but there's hope for you yet.

That’s not really necessary is it..

'Mental stress is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) according to experimental and clinical evidence.1 Mental stress may cause increased sympathetic activity, which could lead to increased ambulatory blood pressure levels and pulse rates,2 reduced insulin sensitivity,3 increased platelet aggregation,4 and endothelial dysfunction.5 These effects, individually or in combination, may contribute to increased risk of CVD.'

So yes, stress can absolutely have an effect. I recall the stress idea being used to excuse the lack of PPE in care homes early on (as in if it's more visual, the more stress it will induce)

Starmer is absolutely holding them to account, he's not screaming and shouting, he's pointing out their failings and they have no reply.

I'm telling you now, there has been a change in the commons, not one Tory is happy to take on Starmer, you can see why he was a top lawyer, he puts together compelling arguments.

Will be the main thrust of the COVID inquiry the Government neglect of people in care homes and wider care in the community.

It matters because that is what the Anglesey MP said in her statement that you are basing the rest of your argument on. “It is their home” she said, twice.

If she’d have said he had gone to his second / third / fourth home in February then you’d have more of a point, though even then you have to decide to believe them or the people who claim to have only recently started to see him around.

Lockdown has worked best in democracies when trust is high in public institutions. The same finding from a previous study into the Ebola response in Africa http://odube.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Ebola_Sierra_Leone.pdf

Obviously trust isn't the only factor, and they talk about many of the cultural things I've raised previously, but if you want to find something to argue about then yes, I was completely wrong, you were completely right. Hopefully you'll be ably employed moving money around today and won't have the time to have silly arguments on the internet.
Everything OK Bruce? Or do you just have your Mr Angry head on this morning?

mate I wasn’t having a personal dig. I just wasn’t sure that the conclusion should be ‘trust is key’.

I completely agree that trust in institutions is important. The obedience factor is quite interesting and something I’ve come across before (have you read Malcom gladwell’s books?).

still, I’m not sure my reply warranted a personal dig to be honest.

Sorry for the terse reply. Just frustrated at the confrontational nature of this thread. If people did a bit more learning and bit less blaming it would be a much nicer place to spend time. There's been a heap of research into media consumption during the pandemic, and it's impact on our mental wellbeing, and the general theme is that when it's both overwhelmingly negative, and overwhelmingly repetitive, then it does more harm than good. That seems to be what this thread has become lately. @JEBUS_LIVES posted a really interesting perspective from his position in the NHS yesterday and was nearly knocked over by tumbleweed because it only offered an opportunity to learn something rather than blame someone. Just gets tiring after a while.

Btw has anyone seem any results from the plasma trials?

There were many set off around the same time as the Remdesivir and hydrochloroquine trials and whilst we seen to have data back on those two (for first seems to cut down length of illness and the latter looks a dud) I haven’t seem anything on the plasma bar a small promising study from China.

Haven't come across any news on them yet. Hopefully they do help, would be great to have some form of treatment for people.

Do both.

Seek out information whilst putting the government to account.

People seem to think it’s one or the other.
