I cant understand why folk dont follow mere advice though. Maybe thats the difference we have. You would be fine with centralised instruction with an iron fist of policing. I am more comfortable with science based advice and being treated like an adult.

But isn’t that what society and how our country is run. If we even dreamt of imposing a lockdown a la China, there would be mayhem, so we have to do it differently and convince people. Unfortunately there are many, including the media, who think it is clever to do all they can to undermine or belittle this particular government at every opportunity. If people would rather they‘d declared a state of emergency, adopted emergency powers and closely controlled all activities including the media, then that too would have been wrong. And the same people who are currently playing silly buggers over the government advice would have something else to moan about.....

The key stat isn't really deaths; it's the newly infected combined with the amount of tests done.

As it stands, testing is generally maintaining the same level, gradually growing, while new cases are decreasing.

A nice stat to have is how many of the newly infected are in care homes etc. because that way we'd have a better idea of how prevalent it is in the wider community.
Thank you for mentioning infection rates. I do believe people can be far too focused on the death rate , no matter how horrible it is and forget which that does matter.

What the infection rates tell us however is how incompetent the government has been. 6 weeks before testing started to actually ramp up to the targeted numbers meant for a good while , we were essentially doing nothing but hope for the best.

Easy to say now testing should have been done a lot earlier sure but if they had tested more then it would have been much easier to track and control the virus .

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick detailed the changes to social distancing measures that came into effect in England. He outlined the government's plan to restart the housing market and construction industry in England, stressing the strict safeguards in place. But he acknowledged allowing house viewings "may seem confusing at first glance, especially when people have been separated from their loved ones for so long".

Nobhead.
Ok! So to put context to what he said, which is all important in this instance, he went on to say that a "viewing" would normally be a one off, whereas if they ok "family" visits this will lead to numerous visits, see in context makes perfect sense!

But I do agree that there are "economic " reasons these "restrictions" are being lifted, economy over life!

On the one hand though, over 99% recover so I can also see why economics have to come into play, when considering the impact on the wider "world" too many people could be at greater risk if economy suffer as much as is predicted.

On the other, people are gonna die as a result of this relaxation, a hark back to herd immunity here!

You can keep banging the drum that people are undermining or belittling this Government, Pete, but not everyone has an agenda.

There is space for legitimate criticism of some the decisions Government has made, or not made, considering the absolutely huge number of deaths.

There were 50 000 excess deaths in March and April only, with an estimated 10 000 in May.

60 000 individuals that have died, with a direct factor being what our Government has done or not done, and when it has done it.

On the flip side, there is space for praise for the Government. The furloughing, for example, has been a huge intervention that will sustain the livelihoods of tens of millions.

Well, from a reliable source testing in care homes is actually decreasing due to a change in emphasis, so I suspect it's not as many as we'd suspect...

... or (strangely) hope for in this situation.

The lack of people wearing face masks is down to this government. It flies in the face of every normal well run government's advice to its population to wear them when out when they merely state that it's a suggestion.

If everyone wears them many many people will survive.

The UK Banana Republic.

I got caught earlier with a pair of my missus' kinickers out the wash basket over my head, told her I was trying them out as a mask.lol

*edit, meant to say with a projected future recovery rate of 99%. My bad!
