Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Sometimes a body is just too old, too frail, or too damaged and attempting yet another proceedure on it drifts into the cruelty level of "care".

That may be so Roydo, but I saw my own mother pushed down that path a decade ago and I was disgusted that it was allowed to happen. I appreciate that medical people have to make decisions, that they cannot always be right, and that it will affect them also, but it still doesn’t feel right.....

This is starting to go round in circles a bit; but as a few have mentioned, the population densities of the UK and Spain France and Italy are very very different.

I mean, as an extreme example, Robinson Crusoe would only have got this from Friday. And vice versa.

TBF the worst hit areas in each of those countries have relatively similar population densities, though (the same goes for the US).

I do get that. I live in London so appreciate it as much as most. It’s impossible to distance at times. I won’t take my daughter into a shop for instance.
But the fact remains that mistakes were made. It looks like they were made by other countries too but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t challenge the government on it.
My view is that they put the economy first, acted slowly because of it and then back tracked when they saw the numbers. What they’ve done since has gotten control of everything (albeit I think the most recent guidance has been a shambles - although I think intentionally so).
I’m worried about long term. The track and trace side of things needs massive improvement if we want to get out of lockdown long term, for instance.

No, it never feels "right" mate, but one can only reflect on a case they know about. As you have done, as did I.

In mine, another cardiac/CPR episode would have been cruel, and most likely fruitless anyrate. There were no ribs left to break.

I’m in the same boat mate, except I’ve booked for Spain.

You have to wait for them to cancel or you’ll lose the lot.

The Martin Lewis website is very good for explaining the ins and outs of it all.

No matter what that nugget O’Leary says, there won’t be any foreign hols for Brits this Summer.
Not so sure to be honest Greece seem to be edging to letting people in around july. And if they do there will definitely be flights
uk government won't stop people flying out you'll just need to self isolate for 2 weeks on return no one would book an holiday if they'd known that.
Was reading somewhere that Spain allowing people in from next week but need to self isolate for 2 weeks in hotel complex or apartment or where there staying don't know how true it was .

Very personal choice though. Read a moving essay from a doctor who had always espoused palliative care but when his own husband (also another doctor) got ill they both decided to try everything and ended up happy with that choice despite it sadly failing to extend his life. The surviving doctor said it made him more appreciative that there should not be a “one size fits all”. Will post it if I can find it again as handled an sensitive subject clearly and sympathetically.

I was slightly astonished by Belgium.

I may be wrong, but I thought they have been patting themselves on the back.

No back patting here. Most people accept the government haven't a clue what they're up to, witness having 16 people on a small stage to tell us to keep 1.5m apart, and all the effective communication has been from the city.

The weird thing about here is that only 3% of confirmed cases are serious (requiring hospital treatment) but if you go to hospital you've a 40% chance of not leaving.

Lockdown has been a shambles. Whilst I agree that solo exercise is ok and even with a "vast partner" (same partner every time), it was open to abuse. The police picked up a group of 6 mountain bikers in a van on sunday. You see families of 5 all over the place and I'm not having it they arent driving to get places. Now you can open a garden centre or a DIY (even that's only to fuel the DIY obsession and keep people at home) but all cultural activities are still banned (even rehearsal in a group the same size as you're now allowed to exercise with)... basically nobody has a clue what is going on.

The advice is still homework if possible but the traditional 250km of traffic jams are back in the mornings now.

Crazy wee country. And being extremely densely populated cant help.

Ok mate sound. My point was that the government, from a health perspective, bottled it.
And the numbers above prove it.

Sorry if I pushed the point...but as of yet I don’t believe any numbers have proven anything about this virus or any countries response to it. To begin with, no two numbers have been arrived at in exactly the same manner, some numbers are actual lies, some numbers have differing categorisations. As no country has come out of this yet, no one knows if the ‘ lock down everything’ versus the ‘keep everything going’ was the best way as we have yet to see a second or third outbreak. I just think it’s way to early and no one should be drawing too many conclusions from inaccurate, incomplete and non comparable data....

Regarding this 2 week quarantine when returning from holiday. Ive got an holiday to Greece booked in August so if that rule applies then ill need to have 4 weeks off work which i can't. But if i don't go ill loose my money as its not the tour operators fault i can't go .I would think there'll be alot of people in the same boat through no fault of there own .
You can certainly get the tour operator to move your holiday to 2021 at no charge.

Then it was the right decision.....sorry...

What was the reason you were knocked back? I am assuming it must be that you havnt been trading long enough, but maybe not.

I've been trading long enough as I have filed self-assessment tax returns every year 16 through to 2019 (obviously not yet 2019-20 which is my first year of full-time self-employment).

But as I had a full-time job on top of my freelancing between 2016 and 2019, less than 50% of my earnings came from self-employment. It has to be 50% or more from self-employment (in all or any of the tax years they are counting - i.e. 16-19) to qualify.
