Er - we don’t have a larger population than France. And our deaths are considerably higher despite the epidemic hitting us later.

They are actually very similar. ONS has population of UK at around 66.5 million in 2019. Population of France is estimated to be very similar. Statistica has it at 66.9m. other sources have France very slightly lower.

They are clearly very similar and using population size to justify lower deaths in France is clearly not sensible.

Piers Morgan losing his mind on Twitter over the death toll from this when he's spent the last 4 years defending the right wing nonces now in power in the US and UK is infuriating. What did you think was going to happen you helmet? I despise that man.

Oh the weapon has totally turned tack on Trump now. He is a hideous bloke. Even if found his early forays into the bizarre world of "celebrity" quite amusing.

Not saying you're wrong like, but...

Why do you think the over 85s are 4x less hospitalised than their immediate younger group? Is it numbers (less of them) or another strange anomaly of Covid19?

Also reading that hospitalised patients are now routinely injected to thin out the blood to avoid clots....and discharged with blood thinning tablets: New Statesman....
It could be a number of factors - as you say less of them still around will likely be a big one. But anecdotally one thing have seen several doctors say is that a patient can turn bad quickly and guess that could mean someone already frail might not make it to hospital in time. Plus a lot will have DNR orders - difficult as it is to say palliative care could well be the kindest thing as ventilation is pretty hard with long recovery even if successful.

What's the general feeling like amongst people over there mate.
Bit of a mixed bag amongst the people I've spoken to. But probably the majority of them are happy things are opening up. I'm more on the pessimistic side but it's been good to get a step closer back to normal. The city has seemed a hell of a lot busier since the weekend. Let's see how things are come end of May.

It does appear that coronavirus is particularly lethal to the elderly.

But it doesn't mean there are few adverse impacts if you are younger - I’ll try to dig out the UK hospitalization stats but from what I recall quite a significant percentage were non elderly. Sure, like Boris did, with good medical care they will likely survive but we do not yet know if there are long term repercussions - there have been several reports of permanent lung damage for instance.

Also would be interesting to know relative risk for a person’s age group - for a 40 year old for instance what is the chance of hospitalization/death due to coronavirus compared to say heart attack.

Not trying to be a “Debbie Downer” but humans are notoriously bad at accurately judging risk and a message of “shouldn’t be a real concern for under 40s or affect your life” has some real downsides to it.
Did you see that on the news last night a 30 year old nurse had died of Covid 19 in a care home looking after a very elderly patient with the dreaded virus and she died no PPE - then a flash to her grandmother with her little girl on her knee crying out - I want my mummy and the grandmother in tears .....
I felt choked the day just before the lockdown in suppposed to end in the UK...FGS.....

The U.K. population is bigger than France. I’ve said not by much. But nicely picked up. However, I also quoted both Italy and Spain, which you patently ignored and which are very definitely smaller. Spain, at 2/3rds the size of the U.K. in particular, is a lot smaller than even England on its own, never mind it being more sparsely populated....so if someone wants to use numbers to compare then please do so, but as I said, we are in line with those countries.....

Still makes me shudder that. Its a horrible decision to make, (obvs), or in many cases, agree with the medics.

Very difficult.

Bit morbid and not the easiest discussion but have seen several recommendations that people discuss the issue with their relatives ahead of time and know their wishes, particularly given this pandemic as relatives unlikely to be able to be at a bedside.

I know the now discredited Liverpool Care Pathway process has been replaced, but there is still a feeling that those over 85ish get put into palliative care. It may be right, it may not be, but it has certainly skewed the numbers for those dying in Care Homes, and to my mind has been a failure, right or wrong, not to utilise the Nightingale facilities.....perhaps @Groucho knows more.....
