Very difficult.

Bit morbid and not the easiest discussion but have seen several recommendations that people discuss the issue with their relatives ahead of time and know their wishes, particularly given this pandemic as relatives unlikely to be able to be at a bedside.

Sometimes a body is just too old, too frail, or too damaged and attempting yet another proceedure on it drifts into the cruelty level of "care".

We have larger populations than both France and Italy. We have a much larger population than Spain. Our number line up with these countries....
Well first of all, we don’t have a larger population than France.

but let’s look at deaths per 1m.
Belgium 752
Spain 572
Italy 508
Uk 472
France 408
US 247
Germany 91
Brazil 55
Iran 76
Turkey 41
Holland 319
Sweden 322
Japan 5
South Korea 5

The worldwide average is 37 per 1m.
This is taken from research by a major investment bank.

We are 4th worst worldwide on those metrics and re Spain, Italy and France, their daily cases are falling faster than ours too (ours at 3% and everyone else at less than 1.5% average over last 14 days).

But as I wider point, are you happy to point to nations that have done poorly and then saying ‘look we have done just as bad as them’. Or would you rather be looking at the nations who have done well and then asking ‘what did we get wrong? What should we have done?’

This is the problem. We should be asking ouselves why are response wasn’t the best. We should be expecting more. But are standards have dropped so low that we are happy to say we aren’t the biggest shambles.

It could be a number of factors - as you say less of them still around will likely be a big one. But anecdotally one thing have seen several doctors say is that a patient can turn bad quickly and guess that could mean someone already frail might not make it to hospital in time. Plus a lot will have DNR orders - difficult as it is to say palliative care could well be the kindest thing as ventilation is pretty hard with long recovery even if successful.
Makes sense.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to prove that I was right by saying that we lined up with Spain, Italy and France. I take no comfort from the number of people who have died in the U.K., nor any comfort in the number of people who have died elsewhere. Nor did I raise the issue of a numbers comparison, you did. I merely attempted to correct you, which you yourself have now helped to prove.....

Ok mate sound. My point was that the government, from a health perspective, bottled it.
And the numbers above prove it.

I was slightly astonished by Belgium.

I may be wrong, but I thought they have been patting themselves on the back.

This is starting to go round in circles a bit; but as a few have mentioned, the population densities of the UK and Spain France and Italy are very very different.

I mean, as an extreme example, Robinson Crusoe would only have got this from Friday. And vice versa.

It’s mad isn’t it?

8,761 deaths overall.

not sure what went on there tbh.

I don’t really track them as I’m looking at it from a market perspective so I’ll obviously look at us, uk etc first. I was shocked when I looked down this list though.

figures show just how important track and trace is though. SK and Japan are interesting as alot is to do with culture. They don’t shake hands etc (I cover japan so have looked at it a bit).
