The five charts which explain the UK's horrifying death toll
Some 29,710 deaths involving coronavirus occurred by 24 April in England and Wales, lifting the UK death toll to the be one of the worst in Europe, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics.
Previously, the UK had reported 22,524 deaths as of 24 April, according to the University of Johns Hopkins. Crucially however, this figure only included hospital deaths and didn't count those in care homes or the community.
But the latest ONS figures released today count all registered deaths with coronavirus listed on the death certificate, and therefore mark the most reliable figure we have for the 17th week of 2020.
Counting deaths in Scotland and Northern Ireland which will be released later this week, the death toll will be taken above 30,000.
This is higher than the official death counts of other hard-hit European countries. As of 24 April, the University of Johns Hopkins had counted 25,969 coronavirus deaths in Italy, 22,524 in Spain and 22,214 in France.
However, with each country reporting deaths in different ways, it is still too early to tell conclusively whether the UK has Europe's worst death toll overall.
Weekly deaths point to UK being past its peak
In better news, the ONS data shows that number of coronavirus deaths registered in the week ending April 24 has fallen slightly compared to the week before.
The number of coronavirus deaths registered in the week ending April 24 (Week 17) was 8,237 in England and Wales, making up 37.4 per cent of all deaths.
This is a decrease of 521 - or just under six per cent - compared with the previous week. It marks the first time that weekly coronavirus deaths have fallen in the ONS figures, signalling yet again that the UK is past the peak of deaths in the community.
But although the number of hospital deaths was down 1,191 compared to Week 16, care homes deaths were still increasing.
The figures released this morning show that deaths in care homes in Week 17 was 7,911, 595 higher than the previous week. This represents a week-on-week increase of 8.1 per cent.
Oldest in society bearing the brunt
Once again, the weekly figures point to the oldest in society bearing the brunt of the disease.
In the week ending 24 April, 3,507 coronavirus deaths were recorded among those aged 85 years and older. At the same time, no deaths were recorded among the youngest (those aged below 14 years).
The highest proportion of deaths involving COVID-19 out of all causes was among those aged 75 to 84 years, with 40.2 per cent of all deaths among this group involving the disease.
These high number of deaths among the older populations have meant that there were 11,539 more deaths than the five-year average for Week 17 in England and Wales.
Prolonged UK peak could lead to highest death toll
The UK’s five-day average for coronavirus deaths is now the highest of any major European economy at this point in the pandemic’s curve.
At this point in the pandemic, some 50 days since the tenth death, the five-day average for deaths in the UK stands at 527, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University. This is far higher than Italy (596), France (348) and Spain (271).
UK coronavirus deaths have been the highest among all major European countries for 12 days in a row, overtaking France at this stage of the pandemic.
This is despite this international data for the UK only recording deaths in hospitals, in contrast to countries like France which records all community deaths.
Looking at the latest international data, the UK has seen the highest rate of increase in deaths over the last week, prompting experts to worry that a prolonged coronavirus peak could lead to the UK becoming the worst-hit country in Europe.
While the peak of the crisis in the UK is thought to have passed in early April, the five-day average in UK daily deaths only just fell below 600 a week ago.

I have yet to see a good, justified reason for why we are taking a centralised approach.
For me, the problem here is twofold. Obviously, people are concerned about what the data might be used for. This wouldn't be a massive issue if there was some trust in the Government but as they are so prone to lying at every opportunity, this means no one in their right mind can trust them when they say it will be compliant with data protection etc.
The second issue is that of security. If you take the Government at their word then you still have the issue of how vulnerable this immensely personal data could be to malicious hacking attempts. Once you have selected that you have Covid, then it appears that tons of detailed and personal information will be stored on NHS servers. My trust in the Government and NHS's grasp of cyber security couldn't be any weaker. Especially with the recent ransomware attacks on the NHS and its painfully outdated, insecure OS still fresh in my mind.
I don't have a huge problem with the first issue. I don't trust this Government but I also don't care too much if they know how often I go to Greggs. But the second issue -- the thought of a detailed breakdown of my movements being in the hands of criminals, does make me quite concerned.

Oh I fully agree with you Lou. It's my biggest criticism of this government that they don't keep us properly informed with what's going on, or give proper reasons for decisions that are being made.
But I don't see how that relates to the bit of my post you highlighted. What's the point of setting up an app that doesn't share the data with the authorities, when that data is required by the authorities if the app is to carry out the function it was designed for.? An app that just shared data with other phones just wouldn't work.
