Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

If there is validation to this I have strong suspicion I've had it and long recovered.

Its hot of the press mate, but the physican himself said the following:

Speaking to BFM TV, the French physician said: "We’ve reanalysed all negative tests on people who were diagnosed with pneumonia.

"Of the 24 patients, we found one who resulted positive to COVID-19 on December 27 when he was taken to our Avicenne Hospital."

Asked again to confirm whether the samples matched results to the coronavirus tests, Prof Cohen once again confirmed his diagnosis.

He continued: "Yes, it matched. We’ve controlled twice and it matched again, so we have COVID-19 in December."

From my reading of it (and i could be wrong) they didn't test the patient again, but the sample they took in Dec.

You might find this interesting mate! Would certainly blow our presumed timeline wide open, though there may be other explanations.

I was pretty ill in early Feb. Was a heavy flu with a bit of a fever, however, it came and went over about 2 weeks. There was no cough or difficulty breathing though which - couple with the fact there weren't any confirmed cases at that time - makes me think it was probably just a cold/flu.

You can only think though how far it probably has spread already, particularly in London. I've been face-to-face with thousands of people since the turn of the year and when the outbreak. With the incremental infections still arriving now in lockdown, the mind wanders to think of how many weer infected in these prior months before anything was curtailed. Antibody tests key.

At the fear of agreeing with the Russian bot, surely it makes sense to actually have a basic supply line, actually put some of the billions poured into the NHS into ensuring they have the basics always at hand. Could the issues every winter be mitigated by a better supply of PPE for example?

I would imagine organisations will strive to have more redundancy in their supply chain, which is kinda what the best organisations have anyway. Toyota, for instance, have a risk register whereby they strive to have at least two suppliers for every component they use, with the more important components having more. They aren't going to go back to the old General Motors approach of making everything themselves, and nor should they.

As it is, quite a few manufacturers were able to pivot and start making other things, whether it was LVHM for PPE, Maclaren for ventilators or INEOS for hand sanitizer. The bottle neck didn't seem to be the manufacturer of items, but the rules surrounding who was a verified supplier, what quality they could produce items at, and so on.

Surely we could’ve been prepared a lot better than we have been?

I’m surprised there isn’t some sort of pandemic response process that filters from government right through to small business.

Everywhere seems to have been caught cold by this

It may be a freak event but it’s something that’s been threatened for decades now and was inevitable to happen at some stage. No excuse to not have the basic supplies at the ready

PPE has an expiry date. It's not like you can just store a shitload of the stuff in a warehouse somewhere.

Honestly that the media are shocked by that is really hard to believe.

What do they think was going on between the start of December and January 23rd (when Hubei was locked down)? That there were no flights so it’s impossible that the disease got to Europe before it was officially detected?

edit: also nice to see a little of Aurelie Casse in that picture

I‘m not not sure anyone has have they ? Obviously wearing a mask does something. It stops you coughing or sneezing all over someone else and perhaps stops a virus coming the other way. But look at the trouble we’ve had in getting ppe to half a million medics. The U.K. has 67million people, all of whom would need one or two masks per day, so say 100 million every single day, and of course everyone else on the planet wants the same. I just think the government are taking a practical view of the situation and delaying in case a test to tell if you have had the disease comes along......or until they’ve built a massive stockpile of masks.....
No, they're not taking a 'practical' view of things. They just cant function as a government.

FFS, how difficult it to get a factory to knock face masks out to a decent standard...or advise the nation on how to adapt their own clothes to make a face mask...because that's what they will advise in the end.

Stop making excuses for a government that's been chronically behind every development so far and have cost thousands of people their lives.

All very interesting if this is the case... All I will say I was poorly with something not as bad as flu, but a persistent dry cough.
Also, the narrative of blame is going to need rewriting hastily. Some poor slaughtered animal was the culprit now it's some American funded Chinese lab.
Its always prudent to hold back. And so what if it came from China could very easily jumped out from intensive animal farming.

Hard to know, i suspect it will be looked into more, its weird that it broke on TV and not in an article of research, maybe that will follow. Some more detail:

The novel coronavirus first appeared in France on December 27, 2019, said Yves Cohen, an intensive care chief from Avicenne Hospital in Paris, in an interview with local media BFMTV on Sunday.

He said his medical team revisited test results of 24 patients with respiratory infections and tested negative for flu and other kinds of coronavirus in December and January, among them a male patient showed positive for COVID-19.

The patient was tested in hospital on December 27, a month before the first French cases were confirmed, Cohen said, adding that the test had been repeated several times to confirm the result.

The patient was sick for 15 days and infected his two children but not his wife who works in a fish stall of a supermarket.

Cohen initially questioned whether the wife had been exposed to fish products from China, but later confirmed that she had only been exposed to fish produced in France.

The expert said the man might be "patient zero".

"But perhaps there are other patients in other regions." he said. "The virus might still be circulating."

Both the man and the children have recovered and are in good health now.

As of Monday, France has reported more than 168,000 COVID-19 cases and 24,898 deaths.

Perhaps a good idea of what people seem to be advocating is around the vaccine. I heard today that Czech scientists are working on a vaccine, along it seems with most other countries. Do we think that all of these projects are looking at the problem in novel ways or there's a huge amount of duplicated effort going on?
