Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Just read an Israeli paper (https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.10324 if interested) modeling various scenarios. Long story short, they conclude that economies can stay open if:
- social distancing is maintained (including at work)
- anyone with symptoms self-isolates for 14 days and is tested
- hygiene measures are used when in public, such as wearing masks, and thorough hand hygiene
Isn't this pretty much how it started here a few months ago?

The fella is a rat, he always has been and his bigotry and ignorance have been on show here for years but he keeps just the right side of the line to get away with it. That doesn't change that he is a truly ugly person and just a hideously accurate representation of the right wing. Don't even engage with him would be my advice, removing truly negative influences from your life when possible can be very cathartic
Still not quite sure how he survived calling for 9 million Iranians to be vaporised though. I guess things are a bit more relaxed in the current affairs forum.

Well, they argue that a couple it requires ICU capacity to be above 60 beds per million people. Britain's ICU capacity is on the borderline (~66), which may be a factor, and of course, social distancing wasn't particularly well adhered to, hence why lockdown was issued after the weekend when people appeared to go hiking in the national parks en masse.

Perhaps another factor is the annual vulnerability to flu. Countries like Italy and Spain suffer from seasonal flu, due in part to underlying health issues that render their populations vulnerable. I've said repeatedly on various threads that we shouldn't continue to live unhealthily and expect the NHS to pick up the tab. It'll come back to bite us, and it's noticeable that this is happening here during the pandemic.

The wife and I were debating this last night as it seems bewildering that Czech is seemingly doing well despite making so many bungles. One factor in their favour is that despite being heavy drinkers, the population is generally not overweight. Here, that's certainly not the case, and certainly not among many of the ethnic minority communities that have suffered most from the virus.

Business and employers have to get the second one right, the first and third are easy but if they start going on about slackers / people taking the piss as normal then we are all screwed.

The LBC "Socialist" is no better. Hides behind being a joke figure. Yesterday's near doubling of the highest illegal immigration figure estimates just to prove a snide doctrine a case in point

Was just listening to the boss of Tesco on R4, and they, and the other supermarkets, have really been top notch during this imo. We give credit, justifiably, to the NHS and other care workers, but the grocery industry have done really well I think.

While I totally agree that the second point is vital, I do have concerns regarding how social-distancing will be maintained in some sectors / businesses.

The advice is only as good as the consistency that it's implied, so I think the government must continue to give and reiterate the importance of their guidelines.

The options at the moment seem to be:

a) lockdown the country to try and reduce the number of people who get it
b) wait for an accurate test that's produced at scale to test for people that have had it, so they can go about their business
c) wait for a vaccine

B and C could take a really long time, and A doesn't seem feasible in medium term, so it seems reasonable to explore other options to me.
They have no idea how long B lasts for

They dropped paraquat {agent orange} to defoliate the trees ala agent orange - it gave some of their own soldiers on the ground Cancer in the long term...... and the Vietnamese were in bunkers underground - thank goodness out PM at the time Harold wilson refused to join that crazy senseless war .....
this war on COVID 19 we can't see the enemy......
It's a downward trend at least, but as you stage the figures are not including everything .......
Its killing people without any discrimination am old work colleague of mine was found dead last week lived on his own as he had just lost his wife ... found dead in bed..... days he had lay there.....RIP....
there's no agenda in people dying on a vast scale worldwide.....
Back to 100%
Typist must be back on duty lol

They have, and I hope the staff are properly rewarded after this rather than just the bosses. Our Tesco and Sainsbury’s staff have really been amazing.

Interesting. Are you seeing evidence relating mortality from covid with obesity? Or is it lifestyle related?
