So Germany is making it compulsory to wear face masks...but the United Kingdom Banana Republic still wont advocate it because they're being led by the science...the science headed up by two discredited chuckle heads called Whitty and Vallance.

The science isnt leading anything dave.

How can they keep their kill streak up without targets.

Somebody needs to edit that page.

1. Boris Johnson - 30,000 victims

Spot on mate.

He's a quack without any sort of gravitas.

He made a calamitous call early on in this crisis. He should have resigned. The fact he didn't and now pushes the complete opposite policy is disgraceful.

What is it with these people? They just cant act with honour.

Dave, in recent months you've accused police officers of murdering terrorists, doctors of faking the prime minister' s illness and now this on Whitty.

Your judgement has been well off beam.

I want lockdown lifted asap - purely in terms of selfish reasons I need money. But, while we're in it, I'd rather us sustain it for 2-3 weeks longer than necessarily required in order to ensure we don't have to do it again.
I agree with you mate that i’d like the lockdown lifted sooner than later, and in truth whether we continue it for another three weeks or another three months won’t make any difference in whether a second peak hits us. It will come, and a third and a fourth and so on until such time as there is an effective vaccine or sufficient levels of herd immunity have been acquired.

Whether a vaccine ever arrives and, if it does, whether its efficacy will be high enough we cannot say.

The current stance of the govt and the likes of Whitty that we retain distancing measures until a vaccine is here is just too flawed, when we all know that we don’t have successful vaccines against any coronaviruses, whether SARS, MERS, or just those that cause the common cold.

They are placing all their eggs in the “wait for a vaccine” basket and are ignoring firstly the time that will take and likelihood of it working, and secondly the cost, both financially and in terms of lives, of continuing lockdowns.

A generation of working age adults will lose jobs, careers, and risk losing homes. A generation of kids will have their educations ruined, and the rise in poverty, destitution, homelessness, malnutrition and the possible increased deaths that result from lack of other healthcare treatments such as cancers, will I believe outweigh the loss of life that covid would have caused if allowed to run its course whilst the vulnerable were shielded and made to lockdown.

Instead, I’m seeing elderly people wandering around in the sun, going shopping, sitting on benches etc like they’ve begiven a freedom pass, whilst the rest of us will pay a long term price.

Hopefully the powers that be will see sense and let the country start functioning again ASAP.

Why dont we have an unlimited pot of money? Who allocates it to us? Where does it come from? the government? The banks? Mars?

If somebody owes money everybody else says you must pay it back. If everybody owes money, they can all agree to just print more and pay it back, reset the game. My guess is that after all this is over, everyone in the west and the G20 will agree to do just that. The U.K. and USA did that to a fair degree at the last financial meltdown. This time, it’s everyone. The only issue will be not allowing China off the hook For the damage they have caused.....Watch your health, forget about the money, we’ll just print some more......

A small town in northern California will become the first in the nation to try to test everyone for the Coronavirus, regardless of symptoms, in an effort to better understand how the virus spreads and how antibodies against the disease are built.
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco who are running the projectin unincorporated Bolinas, home to some 1,600 people, started Monday. "We don't have enough data to tell people how to lift those (stay at home) measures safely," Dr. Aenor Sawyer with UCSF tells NPR. "What we need to understand is how does the virus spread through communities so that we know how to open up people's lives again. How do we contain this virus and how do we safely move forward and try to move past it?"

The pop-up, drive-through testing center is up and running at a local park. It will do what's called PCR tests to determine if a resident currently has the virus as well as antibody tests to see if a person has been infected and has developed antibodies against the virus. More antibody testing is vital, Dr. Sawyer says, to better understand how and in what ways infection builds immunity."We will see people who have antibodies, people who don't. But what isn't clear right now is does that mean they have immunity? We don't know that," Dr. Sawyer says. "And if it does eventually seem like they have immunity, we don't know how long the window for that immunity is."

Researchers hope Bolinas serves as an ideal ecosystem socially and demographically to study. It's rural but before the shelter-in-place order, it always had a steady stream of recreational visitors and tourists from outside. The community also has a large number of older adults. "The median age here is 62. So we have a lot of high-risk people," says Dr. Sawyer, a longtime resident of Bolinas. "And we have a significant (number) that are under the poverty level. We have social economic disadvantage and we have some minorities."

Starting this weekend, UCSF researchers will launch a companion testing program in San Francisco's Mission District, an economically and ethnically diverse neighborhood. That will allow them to carefully compare urban and rural test data.
Residents of the unincorporated community raised the money, some $300,000, via a GoFundMe campaign to buy the testing materials and tents needed to set up the site. The researchers hope the data is useful to public health officials making tough decisions about when and how to reopen society. But they also hope the testing might serve as a template for other communities. As Dr. Sawyer puts it, "The epidemiological data will be helpful in policy decision-making for their communities. But what's really important is, could they get their own community tested? Because we need to be able to do more community-wide testing to safely advance through this pandemic."

The Government co-ordinator of testing telling lies on Peston. Saying they will test key workers who haven't so far shown symptons - Lie. Saying you can turn up at a test centre with an NHS badge at a testing centre and be tested - Lie.

China are just taking the mick now.....

”Spain has returned coronavirus testing kits ordered from China for the second time, after claiming that the second batch is also faulty.”......

I'm all for saving lives first and foremost and easing the strain on the NHS as much as possible. That needed to be done.

I still firmly believe that if we'd been more prepared and used the time we had to our advantage, and then also locked down slightly earlier - we could have already been on the other side of this like NZ/Aus look to be approaching, albeit with a long way to go.

While I dislike this government very much, the general idea of 'herd immunity' isn't incorrect in the sense it is the only way to do it. But it was never gonna work without massive, massive loss of life due in main to our NHS being overrun.

Thankfully, though obviously it is horrid for anyone who has and will lose loved ones and I know that could be any of us, our NHS is at least not at capacity yet. And with the extra hospitals now built and equipment on its way/which will arrive, we should have the capacity to not have to go into lockdown when the second wave comes.

The whole gatherings and pubs thing and stuff - well you have to bring them back at some stage and to me you can't just put an arbitrary date on it (i.e. year's end). It just has to be when the NHS can handle it I suppose.

But like i've said we're in lockdown and for now there's nowt we can do. Just carry on as we are. It has done what was intended to so far and there's more work to do. We have to get to that third block of three weeks (which starts May 7th now) and see where we are at that stage.
