If you have other options feel free to bring them to the table Mikey.

My only thing would be to keep social distancing but loosen it a little bit

Still limited number of people in shops, still no social gatherings of more than two people etc

My only change would be to allow people to visit family, maybe once a month

I live on my own and I'd kind of like to be allowed see my family again if I'm honest

You appear to have lockdown and social distancing mixed up Mikey.

And its up to you when you see your family, thats your choice. Currently you are choosing to protect them and thats the correct thing.

Its a tough choice, its my mars birthday next month and I probably wont be able to see her, her mothers day presents are still here.

I suspect some aspects of social distancing will be in place way into next year.

Don’t you mean that we have sold them so much of our country and infrastructure over the last decade.
I doubt there’s much that we, or anyone else, can do about China when the dust settles. I’d like to be wrong of course.
How dare the Governments of Ed Milliband and Jeremy Corbyn sell us to their commrades in China, and now that Starmer...

I think you can throw Civil Servants and Public Behaviour into that mix too.
Normally I would agree, however, there was a large fuss about ushering in a new order by Johnson and Cummings thus putting the civil service out to graze. I dare say they have been sidelined and probably reflects why this Government is looking shambolic.

Could we take a look at what that might look like though.

His entourage would all be under non-disclosure agreements so nothing going to come from them.
Doctors and nurses wouldn't say anything as he legitimately went in with symptoms of the virus.
What I think happened is that Johnson has displayed mild symptoms and was advised by Cummings to be admitted as a precaution, just as we were told at the time. He came out 6-7 days later and we were told it was "touch and go" for a while even though he wasn't even ventilated. How was it touch and go if he wasn't even on a ventilator?
He is now holed up at Chequers and has been for some time, and avoiding scrutiny.......again! and MOST importantly doesn't want his picture appearing next to the daily death toll figures and reports of his governments gross negligence in handling most aspects of the crisis we all face. It just wouldn't look good yanno.

If you see the Lesser Spotted Johnson before I do giz a shout mate.

I would expect to see him when the death figures start to really come down, or when it's all over bar the shouting. Till then he's quite happy to let Hancock and that dreadful woman who is the Minister for Care, who doesn't really........ take all the flak.

Have to hand it to Cummings he's played us all like a fiddle, as has Johnson.

Does Dominic Cummings have the power to admit people to hospital?

I agree with you mate that i’d like the lockdown lifted sooner than later, and in truth whether we continue it for another three weeks or another three months won’t make any difference in whether a second peak hits us. It will come, and a third and a fourth and so on until such time as there is an effective vaccine or sufficient levels of herd immunity have been acquired.

Whether a vaccine ever arrives and, if it does, whether its efficacy will be high enough we cannot say.

The current stance of the govt and the likes of Whitty that we retain distancing measures until a vaccine is here is just too flawed, when we all know that we don’t have successful vaccines against any coronaviruses, whether SARS, MERS, or just those that cause the common cold.

They are placing all their eggs in the “wait for a vaccine” basket and are ignoring firstly the time that will take and likelihood of it working, and secondly the cost, both financially and in terms of lives, of continuing lockdowns.

A generation of working age adults will lose jobs, careers, and risk losing homes. A generation of kids will have their educations ruined, and the rise in poverty, destitution, homelessness, malnutrition and the possible increased deaths that result from lack of other healthcare treatments such as cancers, will I believe outweigh the loss of life that covid would have caused if allowed to run its course whilst the vulnerable were shielded and made to lockdown.

Instead, I’m seeing elderly people wandering around in the sun, going shopping, sitting on benches etc like they’ve begiven a freedom pass, whilst the rest of us will pay a long term price.

Hopefully the powers that be will see sense and let the country start functioning again ASAP.
Can I just say, as one of the oldies in this world that you speak of, I agree with every single word you have written there. I can't say for certain that every oldie would agree with me, but any with children or grandchildren would rather put themselves in the path of risk than see their families future ruined which is what will happen to millions of this shutdown continues.

So once they have built up the medical facilities, including ICUs, Breathing equipment, PPE and testing capabilities I believe the plan was to open up again but with social distancing still very much part of daily life where possible.

However, like Toff said I'm not sure they have the balls to do that now. The problem being it is still for all intents and purposes herd immunity, and the media and the left would absolutely crucify them for it.

Just look at some of the comments on here as a result of their first aborted attempt at herd immunity. They quickly learned that they got the figures wrong and the NHS would have been overwhelmed. But the reason they even contemplated HI in the first place was to protect the futures of our young people.

I really think the only way this can go ahead now is if they get both cross party agreement to it and the full backing of the media. And I just can't see that happening because as soon as they try and tout the idea about they'll be committing political suicide. Until such time as reality sets in and it. becomes a stark choice and by that time it may be too late.

All other countries will be in the same boat so could pave the way for it being politically more acceptable here. Or they may push through a workable vaccine quicker than expected. They are our best shouts imo

just reading the figures for Austraila think they had four cases yesterday, there goverment measures were quicker in stark contrast to the bumbling along in this country.

To be fair, 79,000 people died of the flu in Australia last autumn/winter, as they struggled to cope with a particularly virulent strain. It's quite possible they went into this already primed.
