There is too many people still socialising currently. Loads of kids out with thier mates. Bellends three up in transit vans everywhere. We're going to be under restrictions until the year end. Guarantee it flairs up again within 12 months...

People going about in threes is doing nothing at this stage in the grand scheme of things though.

It was 4-5 weeks ago when there were huge events happening or loads of people going to parks etc that was the issue. Vast majority of people not doing that and adhering to rules so it's alright.

On your point in bold, I just don't get why people - the media mainly - are using the end of the year as some arbitrary cut off point? This virus isn't just going to stop on January 1, 2021.

Until there's a vaccine - and that brings its own questions whether you're a nut or not - then lockdown from now on in should be an absolute last resort.

The world has to go on. Or we'd be stopping it for every cold and flu going from now until the rest of time.

Yep, what people need to realise is that the whole point in the lockdown was to flatten the curve, something we appear to have done.

Life has to go on, the lockdown is basically voluntary, there is still a huge amount of people working and as long as a very high percentage of people follow the rules, its fine.

The vaccine isnt coming any time soon, so we cant put the world on hold till it does, the only real option going forward is a phased reopening, then see how we get on, we cant prevent the 2nd wave, its coming, we just have to hope its not worse than the first would have been if we didnt lockdown.

If I was in charge of things, and I confess there's not a small amount of selfishness in this:), here is what I'd do.

Down here in Cornwall we've been very lucky with the virus, we've had the fewest fatalities, and the fewest confirmed CV-19 positive per capita, than anywhere else in the country. As of yesterday, we had only 20 people in hospital being treated for the virus across the whole county, and only 4 of these were in ICU. So it's fair to say we're ahead of the curve compared to the rest of the country.

I would start a pilot scheme here, effectively using Cornwall as a guinea pig, testing how things go here before rolling out to the rest of the country. This would be strictly for the locals only and there would have to be strict restrictions on people coming in and out.

So I would lift restrictions in a number of areas, but on the basis that strict social distancing rules, i.e 2 metres apart etc, were complied with in public areas. I would re open retail outlets currently considered non essential, like garden centres, clothes shops, furniture shops etc. Basically on the same basis as supermarkets are now with control on numbers and queuing as required. I would relax the rules on visiting people and would allow family visits and also friends subject to gatherings of maybe 6 maximum (not including children). I would re-open schools. I would allow pubs, restaurants and cafes to open provided they're large enough to manage social distancing. It would have to be table seated only, both inside and out, with strict table service so no queuing at bars. Strict hygiene rules would need to apply where hospitality is concerned. Things like hairdressers, beauty salons etc are more difficult because of social distancing, and if these were opened you would expect masks to be worn by the staff members. Full use of public parks and beaches would also be allowed, again provided social distancing was maintained and groups were kept to a maximum of 6 adults plus children.

I accept all of these things are high risk, but that is what you have to go through to find out if it works. Remember this is a pilot scheme to test the waters and the idea is to try and find out what works and what doesn't before you roll it out to the rest of the country.

The key to this working is testing and contract tracing. There needs to be adequate testing capability set up in the county, so as soon as anybody shows symptoms of CV-19 they are tested. They are also questioned about where they have been and who they have been with. If the test comes back positive, then all those people named are tested/questioned and so forth. Not only will the prompt testing enable us to reduce the spread of the virus, but after a while you will start to build a picture of what is happening and identify how and where the virus is being transmitted between people. So we can identify what is safe to role out to the rest of the country, and what isn't.

This would all take a while before any meaningful information is gathered, at least 3/4 weeks. So I'd start this immediately rather than wait for the end of the current lockdown.

There's probably stuff I've forgotten in there but you get the picture. Would it work?. It's worth a try IMO. Will it happen?. Not a chance in hell :)

May as well lift it as people are carrying on like it's a bank holiday anyway.

Cannot see how a second wave of the virus can be as bad as the first.

It has already done for many of the most susceptible.
Doctors, scientists and others are learning each day a little more

I think that the lockdown was initiated certainly for these two reasons, amongst others, and we not so far away from easing as some on here think.

The headlines about no gatherings / pubs etc until next year just really peeved me off.

Not saying it cause I'm desperate to go for a pint (I am like) or a gig (I am like) but it's just treating it like this virus is going to decide to stop in January but not December. Utterly daft.

There shouldn't really even be a consideration of another lockdown after this. And I'm not saying I expect this one to be over any time soon. But we should have the capacity to handle a second wave when it comes without locking anything down. The extra hospitals, the PPE, perhaps even as importantly the experience/knowledge of how to treat it. It's been around since late last year and I think that's pretty safe to say based on the number of respiratory deaths back in December and January.

It's obviously going to be a while before there's 'normality' and totally accept that. It'll be pretty ingrained in people when it comes to walking past strangers and stuff - you'll automatically keep your distance.

But if strict measures and bans on gatherings etc are carried on towards the last months of the year or even into next, then I think there really will be a bit more fuel to the fire when it comes to all the conspiracy stuff about just who exactly is benefiting from all of this.

Being efficient in testing and treatment in terms of ventilators are THE important things in dealing with this until a vaccine comes.

I resent some 'kin dope like Whitty telling us what we can and cant expect to do for months on end. A volte facing bell end who doesn't know what to be saying next in order to appear relevant.

He should be in jail for his early advice in this crisis.

Reading your post it occurs to me that the government has got it all wrong.
Looking at the figures they should forget all the laboratories and testing centres it's Greggs and Sayers they need to to be talking to the answer is starring them in face.

Some might say that it is insensitive to highlight human responsibility for the current pandemic while we are in the midst of it. Isn’t it unseemly to rub our collective nose in this mess of our own making? Such concerns are misplaced. Earlier warnings of the dangers of our behavior, offered in less panicked times, went unheeded. Of course, it is entirely possible that even if we are now momentarily awakened, we will soon forget the lessons. There is plenty of precedent for that. However, given the importance of what lies in the balance, it is better to risk a little purported insensitivity than to pass up an opportunity to encourage some positive change. Millions of lives and the avoidance of much suffering are at stake.

I want lockdown lifted asap - purely in terms of selfish reasons I need money. But, while we're in it, I'd rather us sustain it for 2-3 weeks longer than necessarily required in order to ensure we don't have to do it again.

May as well lift it as people are carrying on like it's a bank holiday anyway.
Really sorry to hear that. If that is common place it can only lead to a hardening of the lockdown.

From what I've witnessed personally, down here people are pretty much keeping to the rules. Maybe that's part of the reason why it hasn't been more widespread here.

Don't agree with everything there Dave but I do with the first point and your other one about Whitty in general if not entirely.

In regards to Whitty, he was pressed for a headline today and gave one. He should be better than that but the journalists got what they wanted from him.

Because cases and deaths flattening isn't as interesting.
