I don't think it's the Civil services job to make decisions. Otherwise why would we have politicians?

The job of civil service is to implement Government decisions Pete. They're coordinated and directed by the PM ultimately.

So having decided to buy ppe, and announced why didn’t the CS buy it.....

If any future Government do not learn from - the biggest error of all time our manufacturing industries are non existent , and buy in from cheap scab labour countries - started of by Thatchesr nation of shop keepers ..... carried on by Blair - destroyed by Cameron , Clagg and OSBORNE ... they will never learn - we have sold off the family silver and are now paying the price bigtime...... over a killer virus that we cannot provide homemade simple PPE!
It just took this country to retain it's diagnostic capabilities and supply of protection equipment to get through this in the way that well governed societies have. They subcontracted it all.

Immigrants dont come into it.

Precisely.

Lack of knowledge is absolutely an issue but I will never accept you can't cook healthy meals on a budget. It's nonsense.

The irony is that, imo, many cheapest cuts of meat are the tastiest. Shin of beef knocks some fancy diced organic beef into a cocked hat in a casserole. (need a 45p sachet, 1 onion, some mushrooms, and a carrot or 2). Will feed a family of 4 for £2.00.

Oh, plus 20p of rice, or 70p for a mashed baked potato.

Tastiest fresh fish is mackrel. (opinion, granted). But its a billion times tastier than a sea bass.

One is 70p ish, one is £5.00 ish.

Wouldn't it be grand if there was a factory in Liverpool that produced all the medical equipment and PPE the Liverpool health service needed. The same could apply all over the country, in every city and group of towns. Not rocket science really.

So the scientific consensus around social distancing is a waste of time?

Well, you're giving me anecdotal evidence of a handful of people known to you. I;d say the data doesn't back that up...unless, unbeknown, the Czechs went some other South Korean type route to get their success.

Where do people get this stuff? He's an idle buffoon. What is his area of expertise? What has he acheived in life besides being born into money and lying and backstabbing his way to the top?

Well he managed to win an overwhelming majority and become PM. In my whole life I can only think of two Labour leaders to have done similar....

Preaching to the converted here, made a beef shin ragu on the weekend, had leftovers for lunch today with a sweet potato.

Cheap and cheerful, and HEALTHY !

HanCOCK:

"The government is now working with 159 potential UK suppliers. The government is determined to get the equipment it needs..it has been a huge procurement effort."

More 'ambitions' that'll never come to fruition.

This beaut is on the verge of promising a vaccine now. It's always will and going to with him. Why cant he do something now?

It's called announcement politics. and they generally have got away with it since 2010 - start homes spring to mind (100 000 to be built, none built)- but announcements are now judged on the here and now e.g PPE, ventilators, testing and Hancock has been caught out big time.

That slide on global deaths and the curve is a lie. Apart from the US, every European country includes those that have died in care homes and at home. The UK is next to the US for deaths in hospital. France, Spain and Italy have between 45% and 55% deaths occurring not in hospitals.
