That's the worrying part, huge jumps means the prior numbers were unreliable. Which suggests we're still undercounting, at least until the growth rate stabilizes.
We are massively undercounting. A specialist on TV earlier estimated that millions if not tens of millions of people worldwide are already infected but aren't showing any symptoms.

On the upside, if that's true, it does mean the death rate is markedly lower than we think it is.

Of course, but Italy (which has a population density and geographical spread much closer to ours) is 0.2% infected and continuing to rise quickly.

I accept that the infected aren't around every corner, but in the UK the cases are on the increase. Unless these start to trend downwards soon, as they did in China, the numbers can get worse very quickly.

Once we are out of the woods it's a good opportunity to take stock and assess how small-scale it might eventually have been, but while the cases are on the rise here it seems foolish to praise the high numbers of uninfected people.

I'd say we need to get into the woods first. The fact is that there would need to be continued growth for some time before the numbers of both infected and dead reach that of killers we seem to take for granted. At the moment, it's akin to taking the number of road traffic accidents and advocating removing all cars from the road (there are more deaths on the world's roads per day than all deaths from coronavirus, so you'd think that's the least we could do).

And yet rather than thinking "lots of people may have this and have no side effects at all, that's good", people have been whipped into a frenzy so will think "holy crap, you may have it and don't know, get away, get away you foul bringer of death..."

Oh I couldn't agree more - it's actually quite a bizarre situation when you look at it objectively.

An email has just gone round the community health team in our borough saying they have no hand sanitizer left. So health staff are going short, just so Janet down the street can have 24 tubs of the stuff, just in case. Get-a-[Poor language removed]-grip-people.

yes. just looked at the numbers again and India only reports 50 cases. that can't be correct. but even if the mortality rate is 1% (which is still 10x flu), if the contagion rate (?) is 2.5, or roughly 2x the flu rate, then it will spread twice as quickly and ten times as much will die. these are big numbers. US flu cases are estimated at 34 MM for the current flu season. 2x spread would be roughly 75 MM covid19 cases in the US. At a 1% mortality rate that's 750,000 deaths. But "it's only the flu."

same thing here, panic kicks in..

Seems far too odd that random people in the UK are catching this.

I mean at first there was clear links with other countries but now it's literally just a random person being announced as catching it.

Really starting to get the idea that the virus has existed a little longer than a month here but too many aren't actually getting much of the symptoms.
