Unfortunately that is not correct....sorry, the chart may be, but it is a very selective set of nations it is being compared to. Do the same again with France, Italy, Uk, Spain etc, and see how they compare against countries in lockdown....

In the interests of fairness, here’s that chart:

83291

You are correct, although i would suggest the Sweden curve shows they are on course to be as badly effected as those nations.

How come Taiwan has managed to have so few deaths? Particularly when so many would have returned from mainland China for Chinese New year?

I think Austria have done quite well too by the sound of it. They locked down very early.

Yep, there's obviously examples of those countries which have locked down who have done it well and efficiently (NZ are in a really good place, relatively speaking, and Austria and Denmark seem to be readying themselves to lift certain measures and see how that goes).

Just meant in general it's baffling how the only 'solution' they ended up having (as in all the western governments in particular) was lockdown - basically a 17th-century style response.

A couple of interesting facets on Sweden, close to 50% of Swedes live alone and have a high degree of social compliance. They are land bordered by countries who are in lock down. All of these things i think help manage an early out break and i think they are still in that phase. They are showing uneasy signs of exponential growth, they have the highest death rate per infection of all the Nordic countries.

Its an interesting argument on the economy, they are still motoring away at the moment, but internationally who are they trading with there has been massive disruption with over half of humanity in lock down. They are behind a trend of lock downs and there are growing calls and pressure in Swedan to implement some form of lock down. They may just go into one just as other countries begin to emerge. Another point would be going on in the months ahead and if you were an international company or government do you really want to be investing or trading with and in a country that you know let the virus run rampant through the country. I dont think countries will be opening up their borders for Swedes to travel any time soon either.

Its really a fascinating one to keep an eye on, its either genius or madness.

I think it’s mainly due to a lot of the countries in that area are more prepared for pandemics.
The countries that appear to have been least hit are the ones that took clear and decisive action immediately.
What did they do though? They didn't have an immediate lockdown did they? I honestly don't know

I was just reading about it here funny enough:
Tsai’s government, helped by the lessons learned during the Sars crisis in 2003 and having Chen Chien-jen, an epidemiologist, as vice-president, took an extremely proactive approach. Screening of travellers from Wuhan began in late December, as soon as China warned of a mysterious new pneumonia.

Strolled over to the corner shop yesterday and was surprised to see they were selling face masks, 12 euro for 3 masks. They were just basic surgical masks, nothing like N95s. Thats some mark up, considering they are single use.

Perhaps the future, id say there are a number of manufactures out there beginning to produce these and they will begin to feed these into the local supply chain, it might be very common soon to see masks for sale everywhere.
