Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I will admit that I am a bit confused now.

As some will recall, Mrs R has been in the care of medical people recently who made her better. So I/we follow their advice to the letter, ish.

So when the CMO and the top scientist bloke say that sporting events pose no real issues re this thing spreading, my natural instinct is to think, "Ok mate, sound."

But. Sommet doesnt quite add up.
In fairness, I think they mean at this stage - I think there's a very very high probability that as we get into the thousands of confirmed cases in the UK we will see sporting events cancelled, but they model the spread of this every day and presumably the models suggest that with so few confirmed cases, sporting events won't have any large impact.

Governments always get criticism no matter what they do (and for good reason), but I'm hugely relieved that the UK response is being led by some of the worlds best scientists and not the whim of politicians.

It;s not nonsense. It's an act of national treachery.

This government are failing in the first task of governing: to protect the people of the country.

One of Brexit’s biggest bankrollers is now involved in a new money-spinning exercise, attempting to profit from coronavirus.
It emerged earlier this week that Arron Banks, the multi-millionaire who bankrolled the Leave.EU referendum campaign is attempting to take over an iodine producer and sell its products as a disinfectant to those concerned about the coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement, Banks, who is a majority shareholder of Iofina said its products are “a low tech solution with a proven track record” and that the business should target people worried about suffering from viruses. This morally bankrupt move was buried in the Telegraph’s business section, unbelievable and unacceptable in equal measure. Corporate capitalist's see an opportunity in every scenario of human misery!
Surely we want our chemical companies producing more of these Iodine based cleaning products. Anything that helps reduce the spread of these types of diseases is good isn't it.? Especially with all the nobs about panic buying from the shops so that the majority of us are not able to sanitise properly.

People make profits on the back of all consumer goods all of the time. So long as they don't start profiteering by putting up the prices during emergencies like this, I don't have a problem. As far as I'm aware there's been no mention of this happening.

Hardly worth bringing back the death sentence for. In fact it will most likely save lives.

Itls not time to panic. You're misunderstanding my posts.

It's time for action. There's a massive difference.
They had a cobra meeting and what come out of that was to have another cobra meeting.

Hahaha absolute barnpots running this country. However I have noticed businesses love a meeting about a meeting. Pre meeting meeting.

These tools are going to mess this up.

Gratifying though it might be, I'm not sure hanging Aaron Banks will act as a deterrent for the virus Dave. You've fallen into the Priti Patel trap of thinking viruses think about the consequences before they get sneezed onto people. They're just badass.

They'll mess it up because, ideologically, they are not equipped for this crisis. It requires a belief in the state and a will to the use the state to unleash the nation's massive resources to get on top of this. They simply oppose that with every fibre in their bodies. They are 'light touch' when it comes to the economy and intervention and it'll cost us all.

A profiteer from a deadly virus. Profiteers in wartime would get the book thrown at them. Same difference here.

To just describe it as the flu would be highly irresponsible of health officials, mostly because it is clearly not the flu. In a town of 50000 with a 1% incidence and 1% mortality rate, this means that 50 people would die over and above those that die from the flu. Why would anyone want to claim it is just the flu when it isn't?

Flu death rate is 0.1%, Corona virus could be as high as 2%
Flu is less easily spread, Corona virus is more easily spread
Flu kills younger children, Corona virus doesn't seem to
Older men, but not women, in their >40s are more likely to die from corona virus
Corona virus appears more likely to lead to pneumonia versus flu
There are antiviral drugs/vaccines for the flu, there are none for corona virus

This outbreak is something that should be contained and managed if at all possible.
Of course there aren't vaccines for it , it didn't exist 3 months ago !

Or maybe it did and noone realised what it was until it started spreading?

Pneumonia can actually occur in people just out of the blue without being caught. For example a family member of my wife's died from it after seemingly recovering from her health issues. My mother in law got it despite not leaving a warm house or having any contact with anyone who had it.

All these facts and figures are based on essentially 3 months recorded history and in no way can be used to create a mirage of how deadly the virus is. If you step away from what the papers are saying, the symptoms are the same, the way it acts is the same and it provides the same risk as the regular flu.

I've said it before but this isn't the first flu outbreak the world has seen. It's not the first this country has seen. The only difference with the Corona virus compared to every other one is that the media haven't shut up about this one. It's had far more coverage than any other virus to have existed in modern times without a single news outlet printing the real facts about it. Everyone that reads about it doesn't get the full story , doesn't get the reality of it.

What they get is the killer virus that poses a risk to everyone without telling people who it is deadly to. You get the whole isolation thing without telling people that in all honesty you won't even know you had it.

Why aren't anyone talking about the truth of it? It's only killing old people / serious health issues. Most people barely have any symptoms even if they do get it.

Or perhaps people should look at the reality. A massive surge in the healthcare system that is not needed (28000 don't have it to 200 who do). The panic buying that has led to people spending money that they otherwise would be saving.

Or even the fact it's actually stopped spreading in China already without a vaccine.

Controlling / minimising the risk of Covid-19 is the one thing I genuinely hoped to see the Tories succeed in, and they’re looking primed and ready to make a Pickfordesque howler. Only this isn’t a goal, it’s potentially a lot of people’s lives.
