From October last year, some 3 million people have been affected by flu in Italy. Between Jan 6th and Jan 12th alone, there were 374,000 confirmed cases, or 62,333 per day vs 281 per day for coronavirus.
So why do you think a significant part of Italy has gone into quarantine?

I'm not kidding when I say this: he should be hanged.

I'd bring back the death penalty for scum like that.
Here's one I prepared earlier, that I bring out now and then when I read nonsense posts like thislol
Let's bring back the death penalty.

No, that's barbaric and would be a total violation of human rights.

Okay. Let's just bring back the death penalty for Tory scum and Brexit voters then.

That sounds like a plan.;)

I will admit that I am a bit confused now.

As some will recall, Mrs R has been in the care of medical people recently who made her better. So I/we follow their advice to the letter, ish.

So when the CMO and the top scientist bloke say that sporting events pose no real issues re this thing spreading, my natural instinct is to think, "Ok mate, sound."

But. Sommet doesnt quite add up.

No, there hasnt. Lets hope it stays that way.

And it was an analogy. If you get the concept of 35000 car crash victims turning up a hospital, you will get what the health people are trying to avoid.

Also of note, the NHS 'process' around 15,000 people per day through the emergency department at the moment (in England).

Perhaps posted already, but a good source of maps/tracking/graphical info:

Exactly. Flu, kills tens of thousands each year, regular old flu, for which there is herd immunity, effective vaccines.

Consider the mortality rate of flu compared to coronavirus and you can begin to extrapolate what things could look like once this is in unconstrained circulation within the general populace. Just like flu is, only no-one has any immunity and it's showing itself to be highly communicable.

16 million people are in curfew conditions in Italy causing severe economic disruption. That policy has not been implemented without massive supporting evidence.

You'd be naive in the extreme to think that we're not headed the same way.

They're holding off banning them until it's in greater circulation here and the need to slow the spread and its impact on the health system becomes acute. You can see from what they're saying, it's going to spread here, it's impossible to stop it. They want to try and slow the rate at which people get it but they also don't want to see everyone avoiding it till next winter when the pressure is once again on from seasonal flu.

They've not banned gatherings yet because we're slightly behind the curve you can see in Italy, Germany and France. They of course have banned them or soon will. We'll follow.

Southampton Critical care unit has been closed.
One member of staff working a night shift had it.
Now, having spent weeks in that unit myself, the fact it was a night shift weekend worker doesent surprise me in the slightest.

It;s not nonsense. It's an act of national treachery.

This government are failing in the first task of governing: to protect the people of the country.

Boris should shake a leg and get them 40 new hospitals sorted really.

Unless he's got Harry Potter powers they'd come too late.

Maybe an emergency act of parliament authorising the compulsory conversion of the most suitable buildings in various regions into temporary hospitals. Hotels, or schools/colleges? Army barracks?

Retired health workers incentivised to return to work.

Fast tracking of nurse/trainee doctors, pay them to interrupt their studies and serve on the front line?

Talk to industry, can ventilators even be made in this country?

I'm worried for people who need medical intervention in the coming months, friends and family amongst them.

Maybe the hospitals would be like those cardboard buses he reckoned he builds in his spare time?
