Well if we make the reasonable assumption that there are going to be people out there who have caught this that the authorities don't know about, and therefore don't include in their statistics, it's impossible for the figure to get bigger, isn't it? It can literally only get lower.

Not really Bruce as think you are assuming that we have correctly diagnosed all the deaths due to Covid-19, would not be unheard of in the early stages of a new disease for casualties to be incorrectly assigned

If China (or any other developed country) wanted to release a virus that would spread around the world and kill half the planets population, they wouldn't need a 'test run'.

You're vastly underestimating just how advanced biomedical science is. We know exactly how and why viruses spread. As I said, if an advanced country wanted to kill 50% of the worlds population with a deadly virus (why would they...?!), they could.

I've held that opinion since before Trump said anything about it. In reality the only complete data we have is from the diamond princess where 3700 people were tested, 17% tested positive 620, of those just over 50% 318 had no symptoms. Transferring this to the general population it will lower the fatality rate % by half. Even with the complete data it is also skewed by the demographic of those on board almost half the passengers are over 70.
So the option I have formed on this is perfectly valid. 24 hour news and social media have made this worse in people's heads than it actually is. Don't get me wrong it's bad but nowhere near as bad as we are led to believe.

But it isn’t complete, it is still changing.

And whilst the figures give some helpful info it isn’t going to be representative in real world - transmission is probably easier on the ship than on land but equally those infected were probably diagnosed and given supportive treatment like fluids/antivirals earlier in their symptoms likely reducing mortality rates.

Every large public gathering which is cancelled reduces the overall chance of spreading the virus, therefore most public gatherings being postponed is obviously better than not bothering at all.

Sure, but why keep restaurants and cafes open where the risk of passing it on is probably quite high. Customers being a whole metre away is pretty pointless when it’s well within the radius of germ spreading from a cough.

It seems a very weird, half arsed approach to a quarantine.

You’re asking questions that have already been answered...

It’s not about being half arsed, it’s about not tanking the entire country’s economy at the same time, and allowing there to be a semblance of a normal life to take place. You cannot just barricade everybody in their homes.

Presumably scientists and epidemiologists who have studied viruses for many years...? If I had to listen to anybody's opinion on the matter, I'd probably choose theirs.
