Some of the numbers coming out this week are going to be horrific. And probably till mid April. Devastating, actually for all of us.

But we can't stay locked down. The consequences would be worse. I've argued that the measure has to meet the danger and to be fair governments have largely done that. Even if lock down is unpalatable.

There's 10 million unemployed in the US, I don't know the UK's figures. Whatever the numbers that's not sustainable long term. It's a bitter pill but the sooner folks are back to work the better.

Hunker down let's ride this out. There simply isn't any other option.

People need to learn how to endure during harder times that’s all. The UK of the 40’s would be ashamed of how weak and spoiled this nations people have become.

'People need to learn how to endure harder times'

People are losing their jobs and businesses. Estimated 1/5 small businesses (each which will likely employ other people) will not make it through this. Those estimates are conservative.

You might need a Leicesters of paper signed to go shopping if these idiots spoil it ........ with going out unnecessary.....

Yes indeed. Harder times are here already - and they are about to get a whole lot worse

I accept that and sure pretty much everybody does. The next few weeks in the UK in particular are going to be even rougher in terms of numbers, we just have to hope we see some sort of decline like other European nations have. Absolutely agree that the priority in the short term has to be saving as many lives as we can.

I don't think people losing jobs, businesses, potentially their homes etc or just in general another recession which could be 10x worse than 2008 should just be brushed off as 'people need to learn to live through harder times'.

Find it funny how anyone mentioning the war during the Brexit crapshow would (rightly) be called out for it. Why the hell are people so keen to use that analogy now.

We don't live in the 1940s.

Unless they didn't do lockdown. Then the reverse would be true.

We'll have to see what happens with Sweden. Or why not look what has happened in Taiwan and South Korea?

I don't think not doing lockdown was the right path for us to take at the time we went into it, like. We had little choice.

But there has been options there and we didn't take them or didn't ready ourselves enough to keep other options open.

I think the threat was massively underestimated to begin with, probably because folks trusted the figures coming out of China. Whatever your political divide now we're seeing folks step up to the plate.

That's hugely important and emotional but I also see a stoicism. A sense that, yes there will be grief but importantly this too will pass.

Nope, more concerned about health than money.

Long term if people have less money or, to put it better, less opportunities to have the money they need to live, they're going to be unhealthier.

Stress, risk of unemployment, risk of losing your entire business.

Come on Nymz. The two are clearly linked. It's ridiculous to deny that.

One is short term; save lives, protect NHS, follow the lockdown rules etc.

One is long term and there needs to be a balance.

I'm not saying the time to get out of the short-term option has come. It hasn't.

But given the UK can look to certain European countries who are ahead of us on the curve, we at least should have some kind of idea how it could go when we do come out of it.

We don't live in the 1940s.

Job Retention Scheme, mortgage freezing, free school meals translated to home, people can and will get through this and the gov are giving us every chance to do this.

We have literally been in lockdown for 14 days... 14 and people are already saying bin it off and just let everyone spread this thing.
