My daughter (apprentice hairdresser) was furloughed on the 21st March. Got paid today but received her full apprentice wage up to the 21st March but none of the 80% furlough money for the period 21st to 31st. She was told that this would follow in due course when received from the government. I’m really not hopeful she will see this money anytime soon. Fortunately she lives at home with us and apart from her mobile phone contract has no ongoing financial commitments( well apart from the money she owes me for her car insuranceo_O) Others will not be so lucky so will need these payments to start coming through pretty quickly.

It will be ok, the grant from HMRC was probably set up too late to be included in this month's payroll.

Some companies have cash in the bank and just paid the 80% out anyhow knowing they will get this back, but that company might not have had that. Seeing it can be backdated it shouldn't be a problem getting it next month or maybe even sooner.

But the Government are Tories, so whilst I take your point it's a bit unspecific, it's understandable why people would use the term.

Yeh like you can say “Boris isn’t doing this right” or similar to another member of staff. But when people use Tory it makes it look like all these decisions were part of their manifesto people voted in. Just baffles me.

Interesting update.

He says we're still on course with Italy for deaths, so we just have to hope we drop off slightly (in comparison to Italy) in the coming days.

In terms of new cases, I think that looks 'good' for us in terms of the curve. If it does flatten out when France/Germany have respectively.

I have had a good 12/14 hours not watching the news or reading in here or anywhere else, about this story.I would seriously recommend this, to any one who may be getting a bit down.Mentally we all need to be strong.I know it's hard but, binge watch a couple of box sets,go on your gaming device or do a job that you have been putting off around the house. It has done me the world of good.

Even small breaks, like a half hour workout listening to music, can make a huge difference - and get rid of those extra calories gained by comfort eating ;)

Worrying that US not managing to expand its testing

Funny how, outside of today's spike in confirmed cases, the # of tests graph looks an awful lot like the # of cases graph. Not a good thing, either. If you controlled the outbreak, you eventually test people that didn't get the disease with greater frequency.

The lag time on testing is also concerning. Patrick McEnroe thinks he's got the bug (and turns out to be right), but he has to go upstate to get tested and doesn't get results until ten or eleven days later?

So what you're telling me is take the known number of cases and multiply it by a factor of 8 (at least), because we're talking about week-and-a-half-old data on a function that's been doubling every three days. Great.

Japan closed schools early but hasn’t go into full lockdown for the rest of the economy and, at least so far, seems to be managing its outbreak despite high population density.

I wonder if that is the thinking behind this

Japan is a special case though do you culture. They already wear masks and do not shake hands.
