Chavez Government & Haiti

Tell me Dave, where would Russia, Iran and Venuzuela be if they weren't sitting on vast natural resources? What else do they do exactly? These states have hit the geological jackpot, it doesn't make their governments worthy in any way.

Err...probably not much worse off than our government if they hadn't hit the North Sea oil 'jackpot' back in the late 70s? What else do these economies do other than exploit energy reserves? You have a point there. Maybe they should expand into the financial services sector...hold on.....

You could give it a go though if you want. Head out to Russia and replace the bollocks you spout about BK with bollocks about Putin. I'm sure the Siberian Hilton is a lovely place. Bed and breakfast Russian style.

Ahhh, the personal insults. I find they always walk in the door when reason flies out the window. It's interesting though that you think Russia is still the place to be for 'lefties'. No, Bruce, that's run by the reformers that the West backed all the way. It's a raw sort of primitive capitalism but it's of the West's making I'm afraid. No good now complaining after the stable door was left open to gangsters. And I must say I'm surprised at your hostility to Putin and his henchmen. Afterall, didn't he and his predecessors open up the FSU to financial speculators - you and your chums in the City of London should be very grateful. It's very poor form to trade with someone and then decry their himan rights record. Some might call it hypocrisy.

Again, you're reading things that aren't being written. Go back to the OP, I expressed my doubt on that outlandish claim.

Still, your reply allowed you not to address my point(s), I suppose.

have the Americans withdrawn from Grenada yet? Serious question following that islands occupation

I'm sorry, the Americans firing an earthquake weapon and hitting the right island... never gonna happen... :D

It's difficult to level accusations of opportunism either, as the US has been propping up Haiti for a while.

The only opportunity here is that to put a half decent level of infrastructure in place and hope that the hostile predisposition of the populace that the successive regimes have engendered can be overcome to the extent where the country becomes at least as stable as Dominica.

Haiti's only real long term hope lies in the tourism and services industries that have been restricted by it's instability.

As mental and expansionist as ALL American's are (it's genetic, you know)(y), I can't fault their response to this earthquake (that they definately didn't cause - unless they were aiming for Guernsey)

There were 6500 troops deployed to Louisiana within the first week of Hurricane Katrina. Uncertainty breeds unrest.

There's really no reason for the US to occupy Haiti, which is why they are not occupying Haiti.

I mean seriously why in the heck would the US want to occupy Haiti. I have been to Dominica and it is so poor it will make one cry. Looters are ever present I'm sure trying to barter for food but to think the military is their to occupy has to be pure fallicy. Police the situation and set up logisitical support because who could do that any better maybe the UN?:o

There is some rubbish spouted here. Perhaps it would be a good thing if the US did occupy Haiti. Bring Law and Order, kill off the gun gangs who just prey on the ordinary folk. Recapture the 4000 prisoners who are on the loose terrorising the folk. Clear the shanty towns which are just havens and breeding grounds for the gun gangs etc and rebuild the city and put up decent housing for the people.

But we cannot have that heaven forbid better to let the place rot and sink into anarchy where the one holding a gun survives. Any ever thought what will happen when the aid ships and planes stop coming. What will happen to Haiti then.

I dont see the Russians or Chinese rushing in thousands to help restore some sanity to the island, or the other SA countries.

What is it you want Dave? And do not say let the UN sort it out. They have been there for years and the country was still subject to gun and mob rule. In fact the UN had more troops there than we have in Afghanistan.

Instaed of indulging in this case with misplaced USAphobia give them some credit for trying to make it better following the earthquake.

OH yes earthquake weapon, are you nuts or is this the new WMD. Better tell Tony Blair we are only 45 minutes from a devastating earthquake on London.

I'm all for socialist comradeship Dave K lid but can't back you on this one.

The US are trying to be good peeps and you're at them you monster, which is very Chavezesque to be fair.

Ahh those loveable Italians take a swing. :D Who is next?

Italy's Disaster Chief Blasts 'Pathetic' U.S. Aid Work in Haiti - International News | News of the World | Middle East News | Europe News - FOXNews.com

The pathetic us aid:
For its part, the U.S. has already sent nearly $184 million in aid to Haiti since the quake struck, according to the latest U.N. estimates. Italy has donated over $9 million, and like the U.S. has sent in recovery teams to help manage the living and recover the dead.

Now to me $184 million is a far cry from over $9 million. I am embarrased over the Clintons but at least Bill was there for a day.
