Big Dunc testimonial - EFC vs Villareal at Goodison, Sun Aug 2nd

He was a legend to me, and in a terrible Everton period.

I don't get why people compare him to say Sharp or Latchford....that was a different time.

I want all over watching us in the time, and Duncan was in the main THE thing to be proud of back then.

Now, you can call him all you want, in that time, fans all around the country hatted playing against him, and also respected him.

Can I just take this moment to lay praise at the feet of Davek?

The undisputed King of WUM's

He's like the Muhammad Ali, Pele or Tiger Woods of WUMming. The absolute best in his field, bar none

I'm going to give him some rep actually. Top man!

Your bitterness towards Dunc is what's embarrassing.

There are far bigger & more deserving targets for your contempt - players who failed at Everton, who flopped, who didn't contribute, who didn't give us hope, who didn't give us fun times, who wasn't loved by the fans.

Some of my absolute favourite EFC moments of all time involve Dunc's goals and inspiration for the team. I think it's really appalling you denigrate him like you do. You don't have to love him or anything, but it's embarrassing how you [Poor language removed] him off as a player and also a coach when far more people better qualified than you and who encounter him day to day praise the guy.

Are any of them getting a testimonial?

It's a decade after he left the club. A career that failed to deliver anything on the pitch. Wayne Clarke offered us more than Ferguson, and I wouldn't call him a legend. The likes of Kevin Richardson and Alan Harper: if Ferguson is a legend, what does that make them - Gods?

It's called having a point of view.

Not everyone gets carried along with the tide of group-think over false Gods like this feller. There's some of us who remember what a friggin' nuisance the feller was putting us down to 10 men and scrapping for our lives.

In fairness to Dave, he does make a point in the sense that Dunc isn't really comparable to the true Everton legends who have played for the club

I do think he misses the point somewhat as to why this match is even happening though

It's not a true testimonial really. It's just a charity match with a clap for Dunc at the start. I doubt he'll even play

He'll walk out, get a cheer and then all gate receipts go to charity

This is just to get people who like Dunc in through the turnstiles

I have no problem with that whatsoever

It'll be a good test for us because they embarrassed us a couple of years back in that Goodison friendly. It'll be interesting to see how Martinez copes with them rather than Sgt Major Moyes.

Still doesn't make a testimonial for DF any less baffling though. Yeah, he scored 'a goal' against Villareal that was ruled out. So what?

As I stated big Dunc was an icon to a lot of fans in a struggling team - never a legend - his goal scoring record was poor as he was plagued with injury - I seen a TV clip of Dunc when he started at Aberdeen a a young no 9 - he had everything to be a world class no 9 good on the ground and a great back to gaol centre forward - it was harsh for him to be jailed, I hope he has a good night , I agree other players missed out on testimonials, Did Joe Royle ever get one?
It seems to me its just an icoinic match to be replayed , and if it raises monies for charities than that's a good thing!

As long as the cash goes elsewhere then yeah. Fair enough.

Ferguson was a good player on the ground. Everton backs just couldn't resist lumping it long to him though.

Miles off being a legend however, whatever the context. I know the likes of Dave Hickson have been elevated for similar reasons - desolate period and gave hope - although he had a much better goal rate than DF.

It seems to me Ferguson is getting a testimonial for 10 years service to the club, albeit in 3 parts. There was obvious frustration and arguments amongst us when he got sent off and we were denied his services during a very important relegation scrap. Having legendary status is a big thing at a football club. Dixie, Alex Young, Bally, Howie Kendall, Harvey, Sharp, Southall, Radcliffe etc have all entered the hall of legendary. Does Ferguson enter that category? At times his aggression, and the subsequent stupidity sometimes, is what galvanised most of us at the time when we were in dire straits.

I'll give Martinez his due he brought Kendall in from the cold and has past glories around Finch Farm. So why not a testimonial for charity for a player, and against a team in a match that meant so much to us, who meant so much to an awful lot of Evertonians.

It's because supporters are more likely to show up if you say "It's Duncan Ferguson's Testimonial" than if you say "We're playing Villa Real in a friendly"

They will be some lads and ladies who will be desperate to show up now because they like Dunc. He's beloved by a lot of the fan base. Saying it's his testimonial will help ticket sales

Again, I'll be absolutely shocked if he plays

Martinez will play as strong a side as he can in this one to give the lads a real test

Going out of the CL like we did was a massive downer for the team and probably contributed to our dire start to that season. Dunc is obviously very bitter about it and choosing Villareal is just representative of how much it means to him.

Don't get me wrong, it's a bit daft but it's decent opposition and a way to honour someone held in high regard at the club by almost all fans, players and staff alike.
