Big Dunc testimonial - EFC vs Villareal at Goodison, Sun Aug 2nd

Yes Dixie Dean and Tommy Lawton got testimonials years after they retired, you're not comparing Dunc to them are you,
and they were skint, I don't think Ferguson is short of a few bob. None of the players who played regularly in the
Premiership should get a benefit game, they are all minted.

I wasn't thinking of them. I was thinking of Colin Harvey (testimonial in August 2003) and Howard Kendall (testimonial in August 2006).

The game isn't to give Feguson money - all the money goes to charity, as is the case with 99.9% of all testimonials given to ex-Premier League players these days. It's all about honouring someone.

If you don't think he's worth it, don't go, simple as that.

Going out of the CL like we did was a massive downer for the team and probably contributed to our dire start to that season. Dunc is obviously very bitter about it and choosing Villareal is just representative of how much it means to him.

Don't get me wrong, it's a bit daft but it's decent opposition and a way to honour someone held in high regard at the club by almost all fans, players and staff alike.

Here's my question though:

we played Villareal three summers back when Ferguson was here. Why the testimonial now?

We should have played Stirling Albion !!
If we play Dundee United that would have been a more fitting testimonial for him. The proceeds could have been then given to a struggling Scottish club or local charities up there.

That'd make sense.

The association of us with Villareal is entirely negative. To have a player's testimonial linked to it would be like Alcarez asking for a testimonial against Dinamo Kiev sometime in the next decade.

It's embarrassing as a choice.

Ok, fair enough.

Still doesn't answer the testimonial aspect to this friendly.

When we play Arsenal in the preseason can we call that a Francis Jeffers testimonial?

Maybe 10 years service. But what a way to end the pre season. Talking about his passion/stupidity, what might have been, slagging off a ref, how the football world bent towards the RS etc. All the ingredients for a bigger crowd.
