I sort of think improvement can be broadly defined in 2 concepts, secular and cyclical. The first is like long term improvement as a player goes int their prime, the 2nd more of a turnaround because they were being badly utilised.

I think Moyes is very good at the latter. Basically finding talented players who were being badly used, and putting them into a different system.

With Beto I think there is a bit of both. He has been badly utilised under Dyche, who's approach didnt help strikers (no surprise to see DCL looking better for the brief time he was fit under Moyes). But also as indicated strikers who are physical can often get better with age too, especially for guys like Beto who are late starters. DCL is a bit like this too.

I look at someone like Mateta and do think Beto could give us something similar. It's not the most eye catching, but it's very effective.

Look at Chris Wood – 33 years old and having the best season of his career by some distance

I think the Premier League are corrupt. The refs are just incompetent.

Too much money at stake for anyone to be incompetent. They all know exactly what they’re doing. Everything is controlled as much as possible. Does anyone think that gambling companies/sponsors/media outlets with 100s of millions riding on the outcome of games are really going to leave their fortunes to the chance that a bad referee has a stinker because he’s incompetent? No they try their best in every game to control the outcome as much as possible, doesn’t always work e.g the derby, but they still did their best (blatant handball turned down for a penalty to us and McCallister second yellow ignored, forensic VAR check to try and disallow equaliser)

I think that’s probably a bit too much to maintain over so many fixtures. For my money the manipulation comes from VAR officials. When it’s used, when it’s not. I still reckon the on field officials are just poor, but the league can generally rely on VAR to intervene when desired.

Sure there's interviews out there of refs talking about 'bottling' a big decision at the likes of anfield and old Trafford with the crowds and the media attention it could bring. In less direct words.

It happens against us all the time. And if memory serves me we've had 3 referees and an entire VAR team been demoted over games involving Everton v the brand clubs.

You can imagine the conversation. "We are sorry to have to do this but you got sloppy, you got complacent.. we got to give you a break to the championship and send you on a 'cheat smarter' course.

Short clip but. Seems quite composed coming onto the ball facing our goal, seems very capable of hitting his man with the lay off.

Also, seems there's confidence in others about his hold up play, both Alcaraz and Gana were pushing up for the option of either controlling a lay off or when squeezing up to get a foot in to turn possession over.

Not every ball is a backwards one either. And erm, what a first full game from Alcaraz. It's a shame Ndiaye is out for a while.

That’s what they told the media, it’s very convenient but these refs referee games in these stadiums multiple times per season, maybe could understand getting overawed then first time but not any subsequent time. They fix the decisions the PL want them to fix, the media then reinforce that decision as being the ‘correct’ one. They get the occasional few wrong and they can’t control everything but the old ‘luck evens out over a season’ line that get trotted out every time a bad decision goes against your team just isn’t true.

I'm so glad Beto is finally getting a chance, I've always thought there was a player there and he's a much better finisher than DCL imo. Makes a nuisance of himself too, his back to goal hold up play might not be on par with DCL but overall hes improving in this aspect and ultimately the job of a striker is to score goals and when he's 1 on 1 with the keeper I trust him far more than DCL to put it away. Credit to Moyes too for altering our style of play from long balls to through balls to benefit his strengths.

Still reminds me of Bambi on ice, but his finishing is better than I'd previously given him credit for... When presented with a chance on the deck he tends to take it, considering his chaotic playing style in general, he's a very composed finisher.

Long may it continue.

Now DCL I could understand the comparison but Beto?

Pete, Birkenhead: Morning, Phil. Last week you said you were not convinced Beto was a £30m striker. Care to revise that opinion?

Phil: I knew this one would be coming. All I will say is that up until two weeks ago I’m not sure even Beto’s biggest admirers would say he looked like a £30m striker. And now we come to Beto under David Moyes. Moyes has got him playing to his strengths, running into channels rather than with his back to the goal, and the fact Everton are actually playing forward and quickly has also been to his benefit. He has looked composed and a real focal point, a handful. One thing you could never accuse Beto of was a lack of effort, so it is great to see his endeavour rewarded. If he continues this form consistently, then I will be very happy to revise my opinion. He has been excellent in the last few weeks.

Strange how playing to a players strengths can reap rewards but apparently we were incapable of such performances. We were told fairly vociferously that the squad was so bad we simply couldn't play any other way than defend from minute one.

Some people don't seem to understand how hard it is to play top level football, you don't get there if you're gash. The managers still can effect wins and losses with tactics or lack of in Dyche's mind.

Glad the lad got a proper chance but also, it wasn't Doms fault he kept getting picked while clearly out of form and struggling for confidence. Funny but Ancelotti shown the blueprint to get DCL scoring regular and yet we never ever replicated it. I can't understand managers that want a workhorse instead of a slotter, a good player can do both.

Not sure if this has been posted already, went back a few pages and couldn’t find it, but this is fabulous. The addition of the goal celebration in place of the colonel’s necktie is a wonderful touch.

To think of all those times Keane was out performed and our horrible goal differential because of him and Dyche while Jake O’Brien sat on the bench is tough to forgive. Moyes instantly corrected that.
Dyche picked the team for the Peterborough game and O’Brien was in it, and nearly every player who was picked made mistakes in those early games to make our goal difference what it was and those three games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Man.City that helped to improve Everton’s goal difference and let’s be honest it’s thanks to Dyche that Moyes is here because if he hadn’t have thrown his hand in the owners were ready to keep Dyche as manager, maybe we should be looking at the new owners——Donthey know what they are doing?
