An interesting one about can you improve at 26/27 in fundamentals, I think the answer is rarely but yes some players can do. I'd say the evidence of that can be seen yesterday in Mateta for palace who up until last season looked distinctly very average and suddenly he improved greatly and now looks one if the better out and out strikers in the league - pretty much the same age as Beto as well.

Yesterday and a lesser extent the derby though I saw him doing things that are a huge improvement over what we'd seen prior. Yesterday he was great in the air for example and using his chest like Fellaini almost, that's obviously down to the coaching staff from Moyes getting with the lad and the lad working on specific parts of his game which just frankly seem to have been largely ignored in training from other coaches.

Does appear he may be a late bloomer as a player though right now
Big, out and out number 9 style players often blossom in their late 20s.

Mateta’s a bit of a weird one, he was always highly rated and he was absolutely outstanding in Germany but for some reason he didn’t seem to settle here for a while. I watched him live for Mainz a few times and he always looked like he was destined for the top, I’m surprised it’s taken as long as it has.

I’m not sure Beto is in the same category but if he keeps doing what he is at the moment we’ll all be happy with that.

The comments about scoring v Leicester from some kinda writing them off as being crap defensively, well he's now scored v the 2nd and 5th best defensive sides in the league in terms of conceding.

Fancy him to run absolute riot next weekend v Man U and that high line with McGuire in it

Still love us to go and bring in Delap in the summer, but I'd one hundred percent keep Beto too, would give us two strikers weirdly enough both of whom are still developing even though age wise they are miles apart. Be a very weird feeling having actual choices and options up front for a change

I sort of think improvement can be broadly defined in 2 concepts, secular and cyclical. The first is like long term improvement as a player goes int their prime, the 2nd more of a turnaround because they were being badly utilised.

I think Moyes is very good at the latter. Basically finding talented players who were being badly used, and putting them into a different system.

With Beto I think there is a bit of both. He has been badly utilised under Dyche, who's approach didnt help strikers (no surprise to see DCL looking better for the brief time he was fit under Moyes). But also as indicated strikers who are physical can often get better with age too, especially for guys like Beto who are late starters. DCL is a bit like this too.

I look at someone like Mateta and do think Beto could give us something similar. It's not the most eye catching, but it's very effective.
