2017/18 Beni Baningime

He doesn't pass forward either.

People are completely blinded by our young players. We had 3 identical styles of midfielder last night all playing the same role. It's woefully poor.

Don't totally agree

Gana is a ball-winner. Doesn't have any positional sense at all. Doesn't carry the ball, other than liking a tackle, he's not similar to the other two.

Schneiderlin is fairly similar to Baningime in that he can sit but also get about the pitch.

None of them are particularly great at passing the ball forward, Tom Davies is the only midfielder we have who is remotely decent at this. Everyone else (add McCarthy and Besic to the list) is a runner/tackler.

You can only play one of Benningime Gueye & Schneiderlein. Our balance last night was dreadful and has been all season. Gueye is grim as well. Truly woeful on the ball.

Don't think you can play Gueye without playing one of the other two.

You need a player who can sit in your midfield, neither Gueye nor Davies can do it as has been shown on the few times they've been picked together as a midfield pair as they both want to go and win the ball, rather than holding their position.

Nobody liked Barry (well, I did, but I didn't see much support for him on here), but he was the one midfielder we had who could hold his position and pass the ball forward intelligently as well.

Last season when we had Lukaku, it didn't mater as much because we didn't need to build through midfield a lot of the time. Now, without that focal point in attack, there is more emphasis on having to play through midfield to start attacks and we don't have the players to do it. It's one of the things that's being missed in the squad - along with having no striker, one almost 33 year old left back, the lack of a credible centre back, little width or pace, no obvious replacement for Coleman and a chronic lack of confidence - should be easy enough to fix (n)

He just kept it nice and simple. Good on him.
But a regular starter? Nah not yet.

Why not? Was better than our other 2 CDMs...

Except for our best chance of the match which was started by him winning the ball and passing it.... forwards...

Weirdly I remember one of the big complaints about Rom being that he couldn't hold the ball up, and we were stuck doing exactly that. Weird how people revision history once someones moved on...

It's not so much about him not being able to hold the ball up (he isn't great at that), it's more about his pace - you can play a ball into the channel for him and it creates space in midfield - or you can put a ball over the top for him. His presence creates space elsewhere

Ah I see. We certainly had more of that when DCL came on last night, but we could defo do with a real senior CF to rely on in the same way.

Rubbish. He's the only person in our team that can deal with someone pressing them. He steps up past the press and then loves to play a little reverse pass into Gueye, Davies or Lookman.

I hate to say this about someone who's 19 but he looks like our best player. We seriously need to get him on a longer contract.

btw - In general I agree with you about our young kids. Most of them aren't ready and should be on loan although I do think now Lookman is ready.

Beni, Gueye and Davies is our best midfield. Beni sitting behind and the other two can both press high and run beyond the ball.

While I agree they don't off much creatively if we had a decent attack that would be less of an issue. When we tried going with two holding midfielders and Sigurdsson we were torn apart. With this defence we have no choice but to play 3 workers in midfield.

If I was Unsy I would play this formation against Watford.

Pickford
Kenny Keane Williams Baines
Beni
Davies Gueye
Vlasic Rooney Lookman
The defence still sucks but that's a decent midfield and the attack has a bit of pace and technique although we would still be reliant on Rooney scoring.

I think Beni should go next to Davies if we were going to play that. Think he offers more going forward than Gueye. Protects the ball really well, and does make a forward pass if he can. He's very good at wriggling away from tackles it seems, then moving the ball on and not getting carried away trying to take on the whole team it seems.

Considering he's come into a team bereft of shape, confidence and quality - I think he's done fairly well.
Definitely has. Looked neat and tidy.
But make no mistake, a huge part of the reason he looked good last night was the flat 5 Unsworth put across the middle.
We looked solid because we had some much insurance in midfield.
I like that he's composed on the ball but we are in desperate need for Barkley, we are in desperate need for someone to do more than just stopping the opposition.
Tie this lad down to a big contract, get him on the bench etc but starting a EL, must win game? Do me a favour.

Gueye offers nothing from an attacking point of view. Look at the chance last night.

I would rather give Klassen ago in front of Davies & beni.
Still can’t believe he’s getting a new 5 yr contract at 28, let’s hope it’s to sell him on at a good price. Don’t rate him as a footballer.
