Current Affairs Belarus…and migrants…..

Anyone know what the E U policy is on asylum / immigration? Is it an E U wide business or do individual countries decide? Is the Polish use of water canon and tear gas an aberration or the hard edge of policy?
Well, unless I misunderstood the Brexiteers, the EU just let's everyone in and there's nothing anyone can do about it. I may have misheard 3000 times though.

Ah, I detect a note of cynicism. I don't have an agenda here, I simply wanted to know.
It's not great tbh, not least because a reasonable number of states (especially in the east) are anti-immigration so veto any kind of humane refugee policy. The preferred approach has been to give lots of money to Turkey and places to have the refugees instead.

Thanks for this. Explains it in a nutshell. I have a tendency to dislike the politics of some central / Eastern European countries for another reason but couldn't penetrate the asylum / immigration side of it.

Presumably, if they are flouting conventions / rules, the Poles will be given some form of penalty eventually.

Czech, Lithuania and Poland have all said that while they accept that they're facing demographic challenges, they don't want immigration to solve them. Certainly in CZ that opposition is primarily aimed at brown folk (they have had historic issues with the local Roma community, which probably doesn't help).

Sadly, even the new government that is ostensibly everyone who isn't Babis have said they're not really going to budge on immigration. It's really sad how pervasive this fear of others has become.

Totally disagree. Are Eastern Europeans that come to the U.K. referred to as ex-pats? Of course not. Are British people who go to say Portugal referred to as migrants? Nope.
It’s a hierarchal nomenclature based on how the country of origin is perceived.
Us Brits in Australia are not usually called ex-pats, we are called migrants or immigrants.

But then, Australians don't seem to be as afraid of foreigners as the English seem to be

English are not and never have been afraid of foreigners, however England is getting a bit full tbh…..
