Current Affairs Belarus…and migrants…..

Welcome back Wayne
It’s all getting a little edgy on the Belarus/ EU borders at the moment. Lukashenko flying migrants into Belarus before forcing them to the EU borders as a form of blackmail. Poland, of course, tends to not be one of the liberal wishy washy EU types and is stopping the flow. Russia suggesting that the EU should pay Belarus to stop what they are doing is just taking the mick. Now Russia is apparently flying nuclear bombers over Belarus territory as a show of strength.

So, what happens next…….

the eu pressurise poland into opening its borders.
they dont want to stay in poland anyway,so they will probably be put on buses to germany.

Russian troops building up on the Ukraine border too.

Of course. Russia only knows one form of diplomacy, power. The problem they now have is that Poland doesn’t really play that game, and unlike Ukraine they have the backing of NATO. Lukashenko may well end up with thousands of his imported migrants having nowhere to go apart from staying in Belarus…..

Can we stop and think for a moment about all the lives being moved around like pawns? Seems @peteblue managed to go the entire first post without stopping to mention the innocent people at the centre of this.

Because unlike yourself, Lukashenko has no interest in the lives of the people he flew into Belarus. This is a political power play that could easily result in armed conflict between Belarus and the west. If Poland opens its borders, Lukashenko will fly them in by the hundreds of thousands. If Poland keeps the border closed, the problem resides with Lukashenko. The people of course are just innocent pawns, but if Lukashenko gets away with this then many more will be put through this turmoil. It needs to be stopped now…..

Personally, when I see this story, all I can think about is the people and families who are being passed from pillar to post and having to sleep in forests and being exploited at every turn. It’s a disgusting state of affairs and we are going to see this more and more whilst we just watch on and judge from our ivory towers.
Will likely be accused of being a liberal snowflake but find the term ‘migrants’ to be increasingly derogatory and dehumanising. These are people who have made the very difficult choice to uproots and search for a better and more stable existence. It’s about as close to natural human behaviour as you can get. No country or the eu is looking good here.

As I went to sleep last night I was thinking of the exact same thing and it does make you angry.

The word migrant is just what it is, a descriptor for someone who is migrating from one place to another.

I do agree with you about the people involved and it is a disgusting state of affairs that a cretin like Lukashenko ( who I would gladly shoot) has put these people into this position. But it is pure blackmail and if it isn’t stopped now it will only lead to more suffering for even more people. Only when Lukashenko understands that it will not work, will it cease. If he is allowed to get away with it my fear is not the few thousand involved at the moment, but the tens of thousands who will be dragged into the eventual armed conflict……

Disgusting by both Belarus and Poland. Freedom of movement should be a human right.

I understand that to an extent, I as a principle would agree with it in a perfect world.

However, this is the first time in my relatively short lifetime (I'm admitting I have potential blindspots here) a mass movement of people weaponized by a third party like this. I find it hard to fault Poland for this as Belarus accumulated all of these people from most likely desperate situations.

I would like to see Poland take them in and what not, but also, they aren't prepared for this. They haven't allocated funds in the middle of the first pandemic that's damaged the global economy in such a way in a 100 years. That's not even mentioning the more important problem posed by public health risks that would have to be adressed. And also cost more funds.

It's just gross, the situation as is and what I'm about to say because the idk "tactical" (or maybe that's too kind, maybe inhumane, scummy idk what word to use) part of my mind would say you want belarus to deal with this accumulation of people and potential social disruption given the dire circumstances they are being forced in... but I so desperately don't want to see that happen to people who have likely been exposed to people being used in conflicts before in such ways up close and personal.

It really is just a terrible situation excaberating already bad circumstances for these people and it's all Belarus and Russia doing terrible [Poor language removed].

Such wanton disregard for the human beings that are currently freezing to death.

You and I both know that isn't the case Pete as it has become weaponised. Why is it, do you think, that Brits abroad are referred to as expats and not migrants if you think the term is a benign one? It has become a catch-all term to describe people who have fewer rights than you and I, and is used to fundamentally dehumanise people, each of whom have a story behind them and a richness to their life.
