Baines or Oviedo?

Of course it's baines. Let's not forget baines has been doing his stuff for years now and is top top quality! Oveido has come in and done brilliantly but that's exactly what you want from your back up players.

On a plus point, direct quality compitition pushes players to be at there best and hopefully this will help keep getting the best out of baines and also leave us with a quality replacement.

You need 2 players in every posistion, ideally 2 of high quality like city have. It's great seeing us getting that in several posistions.

Baines at LB as long as he is a blue. That being said, I have been saying for a long time that I think Oviedo is ripe for taking that spot should we sell him. What we saw today is what I think may be the best option, put Bryan in midfield and see if Baines and Ovi can build up some chemistry. God knows Baines and Pienaar have never regained the magic they had a few seasons ago.

Between the 3 (Baines, Pienaar, and Ovi), Pienaar is the one least deserving automatic selection based on form.

One other thing to consider, as great as Ovi has been, is there possibly a connection between the fact that Lukaku's form dipped the same time Baines was out of the side? harder to prove, but is there something with the way that Baines plays that draws defenses attention and creates more space for Lukaku? Certainly Baines creates some of the best service in the league for the big fella too. Don't know, personally, I think there is something to be said about the fact that Lukaku seems to do better when Baines is on the field too.

And also, with Jags out, I would expect Baines is our captain the next few weeks too...

This for me too as much as it hurts me to say. At times Ive found Pienaar lacking and looking lethargic in his performances more recently and as a season as a whole compared to what we are used too - this will naturally drop as he is getting on now. Bry and Pienaar sharing the midfield role will do nothing but keep him fresher and on his toes and Bry will only improve his game so he can slot in permanently to the left back or midfield role in the future in case something were to happen. A win win situation for me.

The other option would be to leave Bry at left back and use baines in the midfield as he is the better attacking minded and gifted player but this will make Pienaars role more redundant and could have more adverse effects on him/the team.

There's space for both.

Ovideo's natural game is to go forward and attack the opposition fullback. He can rotate with Pienaar for the left midfield slot. It's great to be have a top fullback, but we should also do our utmost to see that they become top all-round footballers as well.

Didn't do Seamus any harm a couple of seasons ago.

One thing I am certain is that Oveido will continue to get games even with Baines back. He's been one of our best players since his introduction in any position he's taken up.

If United seriously table a bid of 15 million for a 29 year old who is in the twilight of his career either in January or in the summer, then Everton if they have any sense should bite their hand off and bid him farewell.

I know Baines has been out a few weeks now but he looked rusty as hell and I do dislike it when he receives the ball and stops dead killing any momentum. Think Oviedo is currently just as good but know Baines is world class on his day.

Baines still has 4-5 years at top level, depending on how well he looks after himself. It would take more than £15m for me to let him go, ESPECIALLY if it's to a direct rival for one of the CL spots. That may not be the reality based on contract situation etc but I feel that's how you have to weight it.

Having said that, our our top 3 full-backs, Baines is the one who I would let go first., all day. I'd hate the thought of other teams sniffing around and trying to lure Seamus or Bryan away, as they represent the future and are already proven top quality.

If form counts for anything it has to be Oviedo. Baines is top dog but Oviedo has done enough to retain his place in my opinion and I love the baines.

29 is not the twilight of his career. Never the less if an obscene bid comes in I would sell.

Regarding the original question, Baines should start every time.

I'm going off topic here but lets say Alcaraz plays out of his skin for the next four weeks whilst Jags is out. Clean sheets, excellent performances and great partnership with Distin. Do we drop him at the first sign that Jagielka is 100% match fit?

A lot of people will a answer this with a straight yes.

Players get an opportunity, it's up to them whether they take it. That Is football.

Baines could be another Distain or Giggs who knows ? Or he could very easily go the other way and fall to pieces, only the Everton medical staff truly know the answer to that one. I still say that Everton would do very well to give serious deliberation if a bid of 15 million gets tabled from United.

They are both great full backs. Difference is baines is the finished artical where as Oviedo is still developing . Oviedo doesn't fit the left wing like seamus didnt suit the right . He is just like Coleman in a sense there's not enough space for him to run in when he plays lm compare to lb when he can run a defense and play a quick pass inside to somebody. For me we should wait till summer to make a decision we shouldn't sell in January as we don't want to unsteady the ship. In summer if we have champions league we should keep both as the games become think and fast unless baines wants to go then he should leave and we have an extra 15 mill available
