At the minute for me one or 2 players are letting down the rest of the side.
Pienaar being a big one in my eyes, slows down play far too much and doesn't really threaten when he's on the ball because by the time he decides what to do theres 9-10 players behind the ball.
Mirallas is another one, he's far too inconsistent, he's got the ego and aura of a big player but doesn't do enough and doesn't track back much, his form directly coincides with how quiet Seamus has been in the second half of the season attacking wise
A lot of our earlier football in the season came down both flanks, teams didn't know what to expect, I feel that element of surprise has gone and now everything goes back down our left side where incidentally has been dry of creativity all season.
Back to the drawing board for Martinez
Overall, i agree with your analysis, although i think you're being a bit harsh on Mirallas who is easily one of our most exciting and dangerous players. Pienaar, on the other hand, for some time now, is a shadow of what he was before he went to Spurs.
I think we have to hold our hands up and say that, on the day, we were well beaten, and although it pains me to say it i think the scoreline is an accurate reflection of the game. Having watched Arsenal recently, and in particular the way in which they were taken apart by RS, i thought they were there for the taking, but they were class today. I love Martinez's style of football, even if it leaves us open at the back now and then, but i can't help wondering why our one striker, Lukaku, was pushed wide for so much of the game. We needed more firepower, and who knows how things might have transpired if we'd had both Lukaku and Traore (or Naismith) upfront. We were very poor defensively and didn't close down, and for the most part, apart from the first ten minutes, it was back to
Moyes-style hoofball, which resulted in too much conceded possession: we had very little confidence on the ball after conceding the first goal and we conceded the game psychologically. Robles looked a bit dodgy but in the end i don't think he was at fault for any of the goals, although i suspect that the lack of confidence he instilled in the defence probably played some part in the end result. Some of our key players (Mirallas, Pienaar, Coleman, Baines) just didn't fire on the day and we missed Jags in the heart of defence. Stones looks promising but it was too big a game for him at this moment in his career. Distin was possibly our man of the match. In the end one moment of brilliance from Barkley (who imo still has much to do to book his seat on the flight to Brazil) is all i will take from this game.
