Andy Dunn likes Bill Kenwright

Who gave what a negative net spend? What?
Look at how we're playing. Look at the performances and the development. My guess (and its an absolute guess) is that Martinez didn't NEED to spend any more at the time (the time being an hour before the end of the window).
Its also clear that he has money to spend in January if he wants.
Who wants to spend money for the sake of it? That's Rodgers' transfer strategy, not ours.

Good post that, some of our fans want us to do a Leeds or something and just throw loads of money away for the sake of it, pure madness. The results have shown that the last window was spot on, Martinez got what he wanted and needed, this place went into meltdown when he bought McCarthy and look how that turned out, spend money and they moan, don't spend and they still moan.

Rodgers has the money to waste because of the tourists, Everton no matter what Kenwright does will ever get that luxury

In fact, when Arsenal took a similar approach - with the difference being they actually delivered a world-class stadium and solid infrastructure - they were hounded for apparently shortchanging the fans.

We don't want £80 seats, mate...I'm quite sure of that.

For every Man City Shiek there are about 20 absolute clowns who do more harm to a club than not. Mike Ashley and the Venkys are disgustingly rich want them? Or how about some of the "marketing geniuses" who would turn the club into Red Bull FC at Everton so that they can sell more cans of their piss or maybe we could have Vincent Tan and be the Everton Red Dragons? .

Those who are anti-Everton would love us to have an owner like that instead of Kenwright.

I know he has his faults but I think he's demonised way too much.

We need to start being more vocal about this. It's disgraceful how a small band can keep spreading the hate like this.

and don't think that I have forgotten about the stadium situation - it eats at me every single day.

It seemed a good solution at the time and the vote was put to the people who matter most: season-ticket holders. They voted yes. It fell through anyway.

That 'stadium situation' is a good example of why Everton is more of a people's club than most others. Not arsed if Moyes is associated with that phrase, it does have elements of truth in it.

Limbs as a concept would slowly disappear from the experience of Evertonians.

I said in the Title Contenders thread: It's about time modern football was dealt a lesson that money doesn't always buy titles...Everton are perfectly placed to teach that lesson.

Idealistic, yes. Realistic? Maybe...but it's a good dream to have.

Thanks pal! You may well be right. I am not in any Kenwright camp tbh, but can see the reason(s) why some have very strong opinions of him. Reading my post back, it does come across as my view of him, but was trying to make the point that the outside world have little idea why some dislike him so much.

Fair enough, roydo mate.

But you see how easy it is to get swept up by the Kenwright Hate? It verges on brainwashing...we really should snap out of it.

I'm all for fair criticism of how he runs things, my main criticism of him is how he doesn't appear to be able to influence the other members of the board to any kind of action that might benefit Everton (e.g. improving basic marketing). But otherwise, I'm pro-Bill :)

I generally swerve the Board stuff mate, dont really understand the issues enough as the Bristol Evening Post doesnt cover much EFC news really! So all I get is the national media stuff, plus whats on here.

All that needs to be said.

The best that ass-kissing journo can say about him is that he hasn't changed our kit colour. Whoop dee doo.

The board allowed Martinez a negative net spend

We are playing superb on a negative net spend, but injuries to Lukaku, to McCarthy/Barry, and we take a step down. Do you guess that Moyes never needed to spend more over the previous 11 years also? Maybe there's a pot of money building up, say £40/50M for when we do need to spend ?

Its also clear that he has money to spend in January if he wants.

Vaulted

Who wants to spend money for the sake of it?

No-one, but most Everton fans would like to see some spent for improving the team (more likely squad atm), particularly given the money flying in from Sky atm.

See, I am pretty ignorant of stuff board related, but surely a reasonable question is ; If we have "made" £350k per season on players over 20 years, why do we have pretty big debts after 20 years of TV and gate money?

Not a pop, just an honest question.

It's wages sadly. The wage total completely wipes out our income (more or less), meaning that the negative net spend just means we've sold to pay the players.

But that isn't a get out clause for Kenwright. Under any metric you care to look at, he hasn't invested a penny into the club since he took over. Not one. This whole "remortgaged the house" nonsense is exactly that - nonsense - because it's set against a very sizeable asset.

He stands to make an incredible windfall from the sale of the club (if that ever happens) based on doing nothing to deserve it. It's almost solely down to David Moyes's acumen in the transfer market that we aren't in League One right now.

The fact Kenwright has any supporters in the Everton fanbase is amazing to me. I can only account it to our onfield success literally papering over the cracks behind the scenes. Luckily, Martinez has shown he has an eye for a player in James McCarthy, so I'm not panicking about the future too much as we have valuable assets in terms of playing staff to sell and re-invest where necessary, but it's just not a stable long-term business plan in football.

I don't want a sheikh, genuinely. I'd hate it. It'd actually end my interest in football if we got one as it's a hollow victory. Man City can win 5 league titles on the spin and they'd all be effectively meaningless because of the way they did it IMO.

But surely, surely it's not too much to ask for a positive net spend of a million or two over the course of a decade?

Wages and lack of ticket and merch money compared to other clubs

Must be. I guess some years we needed to borrow as well. Suppose if I did my own personal net spend over 20 years it would look ok, but at times its been positive and others negative.

And I have a mortgage still!

I think if Kenwright was a billionaire who could throw money around like chocolate, we'd have a 70K seater stadium with golden statues of all the Everton greats out front and we'd be title contenders every year

Sadly, he doesn't, so we don't.

Bristol Citys owner is. £40m plus in loans etc to the club over about 10 years. Taken them 5 years to not build a new stadium.

And he is a fan. Odd really.

How about stating that our wage bill is nowhere near bottom? Or that our ticket prices are among the cheapest? Or that our ground can't hold all those extra people like Old Trafford? Or how our global reach is weak when compared to other clubs, so we don't bring in more turnover via sponsors and the like?

It's wages sadly. The wage total completely wipes out our income (more or less), meaning that the negative net spend just means we've sold to pay the players.

So our Chairman makes sure we keep our best players by paying them well, inspite of the lack of turnover. And that's still a problem? Paying top dollar to have Lukaku and co. here is not something you're happy with?

He stands to make an incredible windfall from the sale of the club (if that ever happens) based on doing nothing to deserve it.

Doing nothing? Have you not been paying attention to the post-Johnson years?

It's almost solely down to David Moyes's acumen in the transfer market that we aren't in League One right now.

I thought we were past this scaremongering.

Moyes did a good job for us at a time when we needed it. But what you're saying is outrageous.

It's these anti-Kenwright posts I'm talking about. Focussing only on our lack of transfer market power, blaming it on our Chairman, yet in the same breath stating you don't want to be bought out by a Sheikh and renamed something as unnatural as Liverpool Toffees.

Meanwhile, in the real world, our chairman is dealing with Everton's creditors who aren't interested in football matters, doing his best to make sure we remain stable, financially sound and still competitive. I laud his efforts. The bonus is that he's an Evertonian...just like us. I trust him more than I would others.

Now, he's got a Big Statement to make in the January window. The reason we fluffed our lines last season was because we didn't add to our squad. If Kenwright doesn't ensure we improve our squad, he will rightly be criticised. I'd like a statement from him explaining what the plan is.

Let's wait until then to pass judgement. I don't think we're in the mood for Kenwright-hate right now.
