I hope he gets a new contract - decent enough squad player.
Does a job on the wing. Good work rate, good defensively. Seems to not create too many issues in the squad. I hope he gets an extension.

I don't want to dwell pruriently on his mental issues, but he seems to have worked through them well, and now they're in the open, I would like to think that both him, his support network and the club can ensure that he is adequately supported both as a player at the club and after he leaves (hopefully after an extension).

I never know if people genuinely want him here for his ability or just being sympathetic because of what he went through.
For me, he's done enough as a player to merit an extension. I think he has a role over this and next season, potentially into the season afterwards as a squad player. I am sympathetic to his mental issues, and think we as a club have a duty to help support him, and ensure on leaving us that he has some support in place, but that would be the case if he leaves at the end of the season or next or whenever.

I've been impressed with him since he came back into the team. He times his runs in behind better than anyone else in the squad, and has linked up well with Kenny, Davies and Rooney in recent weeks.

Yeah fine but seeing as he has spent his whole career at the top end of the premier league then I think you are being a bit daft there.

It is not remotely unfair to label him an Allardyce player because I rate him unlike you so we are both on the same page with Allardyce just not the player.

When spurs bought him from Leeds there was a lot of hype and I wanted us to sign him,

I also think he looked like he was doing well at Spurs and looked like he would be a star player for them and England, but in his few last years there it was apparent that he wasn't going up another level and developing into a truly top player. In 2009 he received 6 caps and 2010 4caps yet only since picked up 2 more caps (one each in 2012/2013). So perhaps at 23 years of age he simply reached his level.

His last couple of years there I think were a bit odd personally as although he still got regular games there wasn't much emphasis on him as an attacking threat...then of course there were rumoured divisions and he was on the wrong side.

I think from memory apart from us the only other 2 teams interested in him were struggling in the league. It was also brought up that for a winger he wasn't a great crosser or passer and had a goal scoring record of 1 in 10 (upon checking its actually 1 in 12)

He looked decent when we got him on loan initially, always good to see quick players...but after the first few games I felt he didn't look much better than average.

In short, I think he was a youngster of immense potential, won lots of caps as some young players do...then was seen to have reached his level and used as a squad player at Spurs, we were struggling and so brought him in on loan ahead of lower table sides.

Was he 'at the top of the premier league', not really as spurs were around our level at that time and he became a squad player...looking at his stats he's not had many goals in his career (1/3 as many as id expect) and isn't a pienaar type who can link the play.

Sorry, I just don't see the big fuss with him...

It wasn`t you cock spanner.

Read you posts again.

What you are saying is, that if a player suffers from mental illness, then this " would not prevent them from attaining the same level of ability ", upon recovery.

How about players that have to retire due to depression or even worse, like the German goal keeper Robert Enke, who killed himself.

Stop digging and stick to scouting reports on foreign teenagers and our youth team players.

You've just re-quoted me on the exact post where I clearly wrote;

I would say (and could be wrong) that if someone suffers a major physical injury then that can prevent them from playing football at a high level again (Blomqvist) whereas if someone has mental issues then this would not prevent them from attaining the same level of ability they have previously reached (Lennon).

Not only have I stated that, 'I could be wrong', I have also commented that if a player suffers a major physical injury (in the case of Blomqvist he suffered a serious knee injury which destroyed 2 seasons) then it was impossible for him to reach the previous footballing level which he attained.

Conversely, due to Lennon (as an example) not having suffered such a major knee injury like Blomqvist, he would 'physically' be capable of reaching his previous level of ability.

Ive not stated or given comparisons of persons who have committed suicide nor those who have suffered and been unable to play any longer. I have merely commented that a physical injury can finish someone's career whilst a mental illness can lead to a recovery as there is no physical damage.

Someone suffers severe physical injury = Cannot play football.
Someone suffers a mental illness = May recover and play football once more.

I have no idea why there is a need for a personal attack on me with such vulgar comments...

Its a factual statement (in my opinion) with a caveat that 'I could be wrong'.

Show me how I'm wrong instead of the rudeness?

I agree he does link up, especially with Kenny and allows him to get forward as he provides better defensive coverage for JJK runs than anyone else we put on the wing.

can't be for his ability, he's not good enough to be in a top 7 squad

he's a decent squad player I suppose but depends how often he wants to play

Seeing some of the responses on here, you have to wonder.

Two totally separate discussions imo.

It came out of the blue in the media (I thought?) and you have to applaud the guy for seeking assistance. A lot of people in football I imagine wouldn't do so and as such its really a positive message to others.

Useful tactical option to have as he can just nullify a whole flank of an opppditions attack. Robertson and Mane did jack all in the second half once he was on and by the end he was providing the outlet for us and did some great work in the corner. Useful player to have round the squad.

If we’re 1-0 up in the cup Anfield Derby after 80 mins and we’re getting absolutely battered and Sigurdsson is blowing out his backside on the flank, who do you want to bring on to keep the door shut? Lookman Vlasic or Lennon? You can rely on Lennon to do a job that other wise players in this side can’t do. Equally Lennon shouldn’t be starting as many games at their expense as they have the raw tools to open defences up now.

1 in 10 or 1 in 12 is a pretty standard rate for a player in his position unless he is exceptional (and nobody is saying he is)

There is nothing wrong with his passing at all. His crossing, yeah maybe, but crossing is a such a random thing anyway. Ged put in some great crosses but as soon as nobody was getting on the end of them then they were deemed not good.

He does link play, you only have to look at his time with us to see that, especially in his first season here before all his issues.

I don't think there is a big fuss with him. Most in here are saying he is a useful option and a decent player, that's all. Nobody is saying he is a world beater. You seem to be saying he is rubbish and needs selling, I, and obviously many others, don't see why this should be the case as he has his uses that's all. People like that are fine to have around the squad at a club like ours, good solid experienced pros.
