Aaron Lennon ( On Loan January 2015 )

How much would you pay for Lennon in the Summer

  • Up to the rumoured 6 or 7 million - worth every penny

  • No more than 5 million - he's OK, but not worth any more

  • No more than 3 million - he's got no end product ffs

  • Wouldn't take him on a free, he's badly gash

  • Stop asking me questions and stick the grill on

He's not good enough for Spurs so why do we want him ?

......don't think it's always as simple as that. Much depends on player type, whether he fits the team shape and if he gives the manager an additional option. As noted on these pages, we've needed a wide player not least because of having to play Barkley or Naismith out there.

The fact that he's surplus at Spurs does not mean he shouldn't be good enough for us.

Lennon picks the ball up deep invariably.
You're right he often does, but to get the best out of a fast winger it always helps if he's getting the ball nearer the opposition goal and even better if he can just run on to a ball beyond his marker rather than having to dribble past him. Unfortunately we've virtually stopped doing this.

I didn't realise that having a nice smile was on the list for potential signings.
I can't understand how Besic got through the net anymore than Lennon.

More than anything he brings pace , something we do not have enough of in the squad.
He is also a direct player , running at defenders , which is difficult to defend against.
He can be a bit of a headless chicken at times and doesn't score enough goals.
If as he gets older and more experienced he can make better decisions then he could
be a great signing.

Well yes. Maybe because of Fifa fair play but there seems like there is less money flying about. Maybe it's because the gap between the championship/premiership is too high. Maybe after seeing QPR spend lots of money on the sort of players who were Spurs reserves and get relegated twice teams have thought again. Perhaps it is that clubs scout the European markets more now.

What it has led to though, is there are no longer a host of clubs looking to take the likes of Spurs reserve players off them. Everyone knows that Levy has got too many players, more than he ever wants or needs. He demands top dollar for his players but people are working him out and slowly refusing to pay it as they know the alternative is a lot worse for him.

I have no sympathy, had he have made a credible offer for Mirallas, something like Lennon plus 7-8 million we may have considered it. But it was typical Levy. He tried to pick him up for 3-5 million just to sell him on for 8 million 18 months later. People are growing wise to his tricks.

I think him and Kenwright are quite good friends. But underneath it all there is a shrewd negotiator with Kenwright. If Lennon performs well I hope Kenwright holds his nerve and doesn't pay the 7 million. If Lennon hits it off with us he won't want to go elsewhere. Levy will budge as he won't want to risk leaving Lennon with 6 months on his contract (ie next January) having to pay his wages until January. I suspect 3/4 million may be enough to get him, which could turn out to be a very good deal for us. For a player who's market value should be closer to 10 million, especially when you consider what Liverpool paid for the likes of Lallana.
The only problem is if Lennon hits it off then then he will have it written in the contract that he can't go to us on a free after his contract expires.

Of course everything is negotiable. I'm pretty sure we never paid for Barry which we originally agreed.

As for the fact there was less money flying about. More money than ever was spent in the summer so it would make sense less business was done this January however I think FFP is beginning to have an effect. Chelsea and others can't afford to buy up young players any more and in fact are selling to fund their first team which will lead to price deflation across the board. e.g. I for one was surprised Shurrle only went for 22m.

Spurs are very strong in that department. We're stronger in defence and defensive midfield. I wouldn't really worry about that plus most neutrals are surprised he has seen so little game time recently which is a good sign.

Pace scares the life out of defenders. That and direct running. He can do both of them and do it very well. I honestly think it could be a cracking signing and if not we ain't lost anything have we.

I have warmed to him big time. I was disappointed initially as he wouldn't be able to play in the Europa but he makes our league 1st much stronger and we might actually have a chance to do the shower of [Poor language removed] at the weekend with him in the team.

One is a 3 times champion league winner with an amazing goal scoring record the other is Aaron Lennon - yeah we are loads stronger

(n)
One is way past his best, living on his past reputation, never having performed for more than consecutive game in the PL and is now, thankfully, in Italy refusing to train with Sampdoria.
The other is 27 years old and has plenty to prove here.
I prefer hungry to bloated every time.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but simply having a threat down the wing will improve our shape and force teams to defend the entire pitch, creating more space to ATTACK THROUGH THE MIDDLE.

Is that too obvious a point?
