A concern about Martinez's approach

Martinez should know by now his strongest 11 after his pre seasosn games in the US. He should know his strongest formation and which players fit into the system he wants them to play.

What does he do with the players who don,t fit if they were playing every week last year? Why are some of the players getting into spats with the manager on the pitch? Lots of positives from the tour but this is the time for NO FEAR BOB to earn his dough as the new season is almost on us.

Interesting flight home.

Get the feeling people on here who are ****ging of Marinez and the team probably have an agenda that goes beyond this game or the game against Real. These are probably the people who were opposed to Roberto from the get go and who cannot wait for a chance to cut his head off. The same people who keep repeating we´ve somehow turned into Wigan because we bought three of their best players to add numbers.

As been said many a time, we´ve lost by a one goal margin to two of the best attacking teams on the planet, who also play in a completely different style to what our players are used since we haven´t played a spanish club in a competitive match since 2005. Manchester United have done worse on their pre season than we have.

Have some faith.

This. Three games against top teams where he gets to look over every player and see what works. If he's going to add to the squad he should know now how he wants to go ahead. f he wants to shift a few players out the same applies.

Seems like Naismith and Oviedo might be more involved this season, and that Jelevic might've just about saved his Everton career.

who was Martinez fighting with?

Whoa, what?

There's no way Martinez could be expected to know his best 11 and formation after just 6 matches against all sorts of different opposition. It's going to take real, competitive matches against Premier League opposition to figure that out.

There's so much for him to learn about this squad.

Absolutely delighted with his approach, he gave EVERYONE a fair crack of the whip used the games to experiment and progressed training from the 19th century by using the ball rather than running up and down hills.

We have another decent Keeper, Stones, Oviedo, Barkley are now GENUINE contenders, Jelavic is scoring, Naismith is showing and more is to come from a fully fed Kone. Admittedly they are friendlies but some of the play has been extraordinary truly unrecognisable from the dinosaur footie that has plagued us for over a decade.

Remarkable transformation in 5 mins - terrific.

I agree with most of that post, but the highlighted bit - really?

Come on mate, maybe if you're making a direct comparison to over a decade AGO, but compared to last season? Knackers that Nige.

No need to get apocalyptic after a rather forgettable pre-season match mate.

Wait until the prem is about 10 games under way before you begin to fear for our souls.

There are plenty of arseh0les on this site that I fear for. As far as Martinez is concerned he is still getting to know his new squad and what they can and can't do.
We have played 3 games against quality opposition and it's not like we've been battered or embarrased by any of them. Things aren't perfect but there are signs that we are evolving to his "total football" style, but these things take time. Nothing matters in pre-season really apart from getting our fitness levels up and making sure we are ready for Norwich.
The work we do between now and then back at Finch Farm, away from the media hype and constant travelling in the US is more important, I think what we see against Betis will give us a better idea of how we will approach the season, but we just need to have a bit of patience with the new manager.

Look, we are not going to be winning the league, and wont be going down.

Once RM gets settled, i can see us finishing around the same as we did under moyes.

Way I see it, most of the 10 - 14 draws a season, will be split between wins and loses. We will just be alround more exciting.

I think what would be best is if he picks a formation and refuses to change from that for his time at Everton

so you really want Moyes MkII

But seriously; this is my biggest worry, Martinez, while sticking to his principles will prove to be just as inflexible as Moyes was sticking to his.

No room for inflexible thinking, as always you find the best formation to suit what players you ( don't ) have.
I've had enough of Sq pegs in round holes

he is getting a look at the squad ,seeing who can to what nothing to worry about, now is the time to do it, and to be honest im expecting a bit of an up and down season as he makes his mark, were short of one or two players, and as normal we havnt spent to buy in a real game turner, so i dont expect miracles.

Exactly, he's only been here 5 minutes. It'll take a few tough games and more time on the training ground...............

One things for sure, if playing with wingbacks doesn't get the best out of Baines, he'll soon feel the pressure.

Part of the reason Baines was so effective is that he always had a wide man in front of him to lay off to for the underlap or overlap, his understanding with Pienaar was crucial in that regard.

Problem I have is we spend too much time on the ball . Possession game is ok when your playing defensive when the other team are pressing but when we are on the offensive we need to quicken it up and start making runs . We don't make enough chances

IMO it's not a knee jerk to have a few concerns. I've got a few myself and I've been pro martinez for a long time.

I think bedding in a new style means we should have played more games pre-season. Some starters will be going into the Norwich game with less than three hours of semi-competitive football under their belts.

It looks as if our first choice 11, or what I imagine it will be, will not have played together for any period of time before the season starts.

Performances haven't been great by and large. We didn't beat Juve, we drew. We looked OK against Madrid and where unlucky but we were very poor against Valencia. All have mitigating circumstances but it'd be nice if there were none.

Obviously there's lots of good things too. Young players getting time, better standard of opposition, trying new styles out and new signings in fairly early.
