A concern about Martinez's approach

Not really but you've made a thread moments after a crap pre-season game and haven't let it sink in or acknowledge our good showing in previous pre-season games.

It was an observation based on the formations and line ups all of our preseason games so far. I made no mention of today's performance or result.

The whole point of pre-season is to gain fitness back and learn different ways to play.

We have a new manager who needs time to embed his style, this is the only opportunity to try different formations etc before the start of the season.

We are looking a lot more fitter than a few weeks ago but the players look knackered at the end of the game, no surprise really with the schedule they've had.

And not really a surprise that there are some people who are panicking already.

Just coincidentally posted this thread moments after the final whistle blew eh?

But yeeah as others have said, pre-season is the best time to try out new stuff. So it's nothing to be concerned about.

From what I've seen up until now there's not much reason to be panicking or be overly optimistic. Same old pre season, some good parts and some not so good parts.

All that matters is how we play against Norwich in a couple of weeks time.

Was i supposed to post it during the match??

When i posted it is irrelevant anyway, the point still stands.

Who's panicking???

What's the fuss? Being able to move from 3 to 4 back in a game or even with every change in possession is a very good sight to bear. Perhaps you are still locked in the age of 442?

I wouldn't say it's irrelevant... because had we won that match I doubt this thread would have ever been posted. That's the point I'm trying to make, mate. You've just watched a pretty lack-luster performance by us and are immediately highlighting the negatives as a consequence.

As for your point of the players not being able to adapt, well today we used a system that was very familiar to us. 3 CBs seemed to work against Blackburn and was somewhat hit and miss against Juve. Whereas the high defensive line against Real was a tad silly, but it appeared that it was a deliberate move to test ourselves, albeit Jonny sitting in front of the defence left much to be desired. So we've learned that our default formation still works and 3 CBs could use some work. Not much cause for concern at the moment.

Martinez has been saying since he arrived that he wants the players to be flexible and adapt to using different tactics, which is fair enough.

However, in preseason he's varied his team selections and formations that much that I'm worried the players aren't really able to get used to playing any formation. Being a 'Jack of all trades and master of none' isn't really what we want going into the new season.

Just hope it doesn't effect us when the real games start.

I agree and yes it is only pre season but like you said he has changed it that much that it seems the players are unsure of their roles, formation and tatics and that's what it felt like tonight. At times tonight I had no idea what formation we was playing as it seemed it kept switching. Also noticed the players were arguing with each other quite a bit as well.
