A Case for the Defence

It is a mystery to me though why a manager who is obviously adept at bringing in quality players cannot translate that into success on the pitch. You see our team sheets some weeks and it's brilliant yet for some reason the consistency of results elude him.

A lot of his critics are putting it down to tactical changes and poor substitutions. I think they're easy criticisms to have in hindsight but don't mean much generally. If I was to agree with his detractors on one point, there does seem to be just a chronic lack of backbone to the team. I don't know if a lack of character stems from a manager, but you could certainly make the case that it does.

It's quite obvious that it does. This is why we don't see the players busting a gut to win the ball back when we lose it through far too casual tippy tappy play which is so sloppy sometimes.

His one saving grace could be the return of Besic who likes to get stuck in. A player like him can be infectious and might just save Martinez's skin before the season is out.

I don't think him building a good team is that good of a defence really. Yes he's built a good squad but he's blatantly shown that he can't get the best out of them, it doesn't matter what players he's signed if he's 12th he's 12th.

The crying shame for me is that when it works it works brilliantly, we can effortlessly control a game away from home against decent opposition barely allowing them a shot for 70 mins scoring a few ourselves. You don't see many sides capable of doing that. Then for 20 mins we can be the worst side in the league conceding from any chance, barely able to put a lass together, getting completely overwhelmed by really poor sides. I used to half believe arguments of 'if we can phase those parts out' we'll have a top team, but in 2 seasons there's been no long term signs that we are able to do anything about these mad spells. They occur so regularly as well. Unlike most poor managers it's not as though his gameplan is just rubbish overall. Some of it is genius but he cannot find that final answer. In some ways it is such a shame. I'd even now think of cutting him slack if he'd just come out and admit his fallibility for the above and outline a way of solving it. But this paranoid persona he's put on denying anything is wrong and blaming refs, players and fans for losses puts him beyond saving for me now. The man who refuses to recognise anything is wrong has zero chance of fixing it. Unconsciously incompetent.

Right, but we haven't sold any of our big players under Martinez and have brought in the likes of Deulofeu for 2 million and Aaron Lennon and Besic for chips. Lukaku is our only big money signing, and he's been an unmitigated success. Do you think Martinez should get any credit for fending off interest for Stones in the summer? For having a squad that is now worth hundreds of millions? Is that all just a coincidence or can we credit him with some part in the development that has seen the likes of Lukaku, Stones and Barkley become such sought after assets?
I think we can credit him with taking the risk on Barkley and Stones and signing Lukaku 100% he shows a lot more faith than Moyes ever did,I'm not against Martinez he just infuriates me at times

To be honest, I'm forever grateful to him for pulling that one out.

Imagine if we'd gone into that season with Kone and Jelavic upfront. We wouldn't be crying now about being 12th, that's for sure.

I think the fear of the unknown is the problem. We haven't sacked anyone for ages

Hopefully we can come to a happy medium and El Fraudo Grande will finally, miraculously show some humility and hand in his notice.

Biggest job he will ever get.

Plus don't you think the credit martinez gets for giving young players a chance merely a reflection on moyes anyway.

I think more managers than you think will find it hard to ignore the potential of lukaku stones and barkley espiecally if they are/were working undersomeone like bill.

Ah damn Another bash martinez thread sorry guys
