Thing is, when has that not been the unmentioned last rule of politics? The very concept of a coup can't exist with it, and coups against states (or more often Kings I guess) have been instigated successfully since recorded history began. Julius Caesar broke the law in taking his Gallic armies across the Rubicon, and his actions brought down the Roman Republic entirely and embedded his family as godlike rulers of an Empire. The rewards are there for the lawbreakers, if they have the power base to claim them.
We've pretended that democratic universal suffrage is some sort of special sauce bulwark against it, but it turns out that a certain type of showman lawbreaker can just reverse Uno society and claim an electoral mandate too.

At the risk of sounding like a vehement Marxist, this is late stage capitalism in action. Profit is the system working as intended. When you rely on business owners to have a sense of moral duty or societal duty to override their legacy or accumulation of wealth, more often than not you fail to see that play out without a check/balance of regulation.
Unfortunately, this election is also democracy in action. The never-Trumpers just happen to be on the losing side.
