Thought I'd give this it's own thread.

Nikki Haley just announced her run.
So that's her and Trump in the race so far.
I'd imagine Trump is happy with that as she and DeSantos will take votes from each other.

Still looking like Biden on the other side.

DeSantos (and most the Republican Party) must be privately hoping Trump gets forced to withdraw and he can run on a ‘justice for Trump’ ticket whilst at the same time not appearing to be insane. Would likely win by a landslide I imagine.

Here inside the Beltway there’s been quite a bit of buzz recently for Tim Scott (South Carolina Senator).
He's an interesting one. Seems about as reasonable as republicans get these days.
Maybe his best bet is getting on the Hayley ticket.

Trump is an interesting one.
The republicans seem to be trying to move on from him but have to appease him as any third party run by him hands the election to the democrats.

That is the big problem - noone will take the GOP nomination from him without taking that (the idea of a Trump third party run) on, of accepting it and daring him to do it.

All the received wisdom and the cretins like Graham will insist that it must be avoided at all costs, that he should be appeased and all that jazz but I think there is an overwhelming likelihood that if he did lose the nomination then he'd slink back to Florida and just fundraise. Meanwhile the GOP candidate would probably find that all the diehard Trumpists / Q-deranged folk would meekly vote for them when faced with another four years of Biden/Harris or any Biden replacement.

DeSantis so far has been an embarrassment - he needs to start throwing bombs at Trump.

Aye I agree. Why would Trump try running on a losing Third party ticket. He’d probably tease the idea and threaten to, to try and keep himself relevant before announcing he isn’t at the last minute. Probably with guarantees and concessions from any winning Republican candidate.

If the GOP don’t want Trump winning their nomination, they need to coalesce behind a single challenger for him sooner rather than later. He reliably got about 35-40% of the primary vote in every state last time because his cult would show up, but that was pretty much his ceiling. The problem was the balance of that vote being split between 4 or 5 other candidates. By the time they finally narrowed the field down, he had already won too many delegates at the Convention, and it was too late.

I don’t know what to make of DeSantis. I know he won re-election this past fall in a landslide, but I don’t think that I’ve ever really heard him speak. Also, he’s not going to be able to win a national election purely on culture-wars. His book banning, harsh anti-LGBT policies, and this nonsense like trying to force teenage girls to submit their menstruation data to their schools in order to play sports will, IMO, turn too many middle of the road voters off.

Wait, what?

Money I reckon, lots of fundraising.
