I know Biden is ahead in some of the recently conducted national polls, but those battle-ground states (the only one's that matter) are stubbornly handing Trump a 3%-5% lead, conviction of no conviction.

The Democrats have a couple of months to place pressure on Biden to stand down before the national convention.

If it has happened before I'm wondering why some are asking 'what can they do then?' in the wake of such a late withdrawal.

I'm not sure how late a candidate has withdrawn in the past.
But as of today, millions of people have voted for Biden already.
His name is on state ballots and would need legal intervention to be changed.
The likely replacement without a contest would be Harris and she probably doesnt poll as well as him.
So, barring health issues, both parties candidates are set.

Well, IMO there're onto a sure loss in any case. But there's a battle-ground state or two where the Muslim vote might stay at home and cost the Democrats the victory. Maybe someone like Newsom who seems to have a more enlightened attitude to the situation in Gaza?

I don't know.
