That speech has the potential to win over people who arent that interested in politics and arent tribal..potentially hugely important

Yes, absolutely.

The fact that the main riposte was from Ben Wallace, a poster child for Tory Weaselism, shows how badly May's campaign is going at the moment.

just realised this could end up with my personal worst case scenario - increased tory majority, but corbyn still in charge...hmmm!

Haha! Me too!

But the increase in majority will be so relatively small - and nowhere near the projections of the 2020 Election had May not called this one - it'll be curtains for her. You'll then get a much more centrist Tory, probably someone under the age of 45, in as the leader.

And the current rash of terrorist attacks have absolutely nothing to do with that......

Sadly, as long as there are people as short-sighted as you, I fear we're doomed to perpetuate the cause and effect.

Riddle me this, though. Imagine an alternative universe without NATO where countries of Western Europe were constantly being invaded, often on utterly false pretences, by, say, an economically advanced Pakistan and Saudi, or else showered in missile and drone strikes that often took out many more innocent people than even died in Manchester this week. Do you think there might be a great anger and resentment in the West towards those counties and their allies? And is it really such a leap of imagination to predict that a small section of Westerners might rally around their Christianity to declare a holy war on the infidels?

Seems ENTIRELY predictable to me.

Jesus Christ. Drop the Western guilt mate.

TBH its a bit simplistic to say these attacks are blowback for Western policy, plus of course it has the inevitable outcome of appearing justification for them.

There is some truth in it, but surely the point is (which IMHO was the one that Corbyn was making) that those people are in a position to carry out these attacks because of the failure of Western policy (ie: creating failed states that allows them to flourish, and also by attacking their (the takfiri's) enemies) in the region.

The situation is obviously complicated but it's dismissive to suggest that the West (notably the UK and US) doesn't share any guilt over innocent deaths over in the Middle East. Of course there has never been, and never will be justification for these terrorist attacks but our Government and our people need to accept that a portion of guilt lies at our Governments door with certain actions we have undertaken in foreign lands.

I personally think that mistakes were made by having an aggressive policy in the Middle East, and at the same time allowing thousands of immigrants with links to that same area to come in to our country and not expect any backlash. Of course hindsight makes it a lot easier to make these criticisms but I fear the situation is too far gone now for us to ever be able to put this right.

As another poster also alluded to a few pages back though, if the West sits by and allows slaughter to go on in these places which is a fact then we will also be criticised.

Very difficult situation to put right.
