I think we may have different interpretations of appeasement Bruce.

A stable and prosperous middle east, free from extremism would make everyone's lives safer.

Of course, that's a utopia, but if you're a citizen that's being killed or tortured by your government, what happens? It's fine to say that military action is bad. It's fine to say that military action may stoke up anger among those who wish to do bad things in the west, I'm just not sure how sitting on our hands helps those who are suffering in the middle east?

Other than Jezza C, I'm not sure who you're aiming this at.

For sure, I don't doubt that, but equally standing by and doing nothing whilst Hussein did terrible things to the people of Iraq would not have been great for the people of Iraq either.

Bruce we stood by and did nothing as Saddam gassed Kurds and Iranians by the thousands in the late 80s. In fact that's not strictly accurate. First we supplied him the gas and then stood by and did nothing as he used it. Didn't have you down as so naive to think we went into Iraq in 2003 for benevolent reasons.

Because intervention has been proven time and again not to work? Are any of the countries we have intervened in better off now?

To an extent yes. I'll always respect those who have to make tough decisions than those who stand on the sidelines without having their opinions tested in action. It's like Gary Neville, who sounded great in the commentary box, but was somewhat less so when he actually had to manage a team.

So doing nothing doesn't help people, and neither does intervention? If nothing else, it shows that these things aren't easy, and any politician saying they will (as in 100% guaranteed, no questions asked) will solve this, that and the other should be given a very wide berth. False prophets and all that.

There is most likely a middle ground Bruce that could be found with the correct motives.

No Bruce, that's a basic human right FFS.

It's fine to say that military action is bad.
My issue is with how military action is implemented, the goals and reasoning behind such action and its total lack of effectiveness in stabilizing the middle east.

Military action in itself is not necessarily bad.

Our military actions in the past have clearly not helped the situation. But to in any way suggest we are to blame for these massacres is just plain ridiculous and if anything gives credibility and justification for the terrorists. Those responsible for terrorism are the terrorists themselves the cowardly radicalisers who brainwash those much younger and more vulnerable than them.

Corbyn on armed forces -

You are doing your duty as you have done so many times before.

I want to assure you that, under my leadership, you will only be deployed abroad when there is a clear need and only when there is a plan and you have the resources to do your job to secure an outcome that delivers lasting peace.

That is my commitment to our armed services.

more corbyn

But the responsibility of government is to minimise that chance, to ensure the police have the resources they need, that our foreign policy reduces rather than increases the threat to this country, and that at home we never surrender the freedoms we have won, and that terrorists are so determined to take away.

Too often government has got it wrong on all three counts and insecurity is growing as a result. Whoever you decide should lead the next government must do better.

quite nuanced this i think..

To blame yes, but the role of our government and its policies in bringing some of these massacres about is a point which is, sadly, unarguable.

As for his speech, that was one of the best ones I can remember him delivering. The point about the army that neil999 quoted is something that I'd imagine 99% of people would agree with and is something that repeated inquiries, from Afghanistan to Libya, have found didn't happen in the past.
