Aren't those attendances much lower than the real figures?
I'm not old enough to know but have read that clubs often announced much lower attendance figures to avoid paying tax on the full total?
I think someone on here was saying how a favourite joke for him and his mates was to laugh at the attendence figures announced at half time.
Yep, it was a standing joke back in the early 70s.
We'd stay behind to let the crush die down and wait for the results of the other games along with attendance
Our 'eye' was experienced enough to see that the ground was say 3/4s full, call it 40,000ish. Then up would pipe the announcer...todays attendance was 33, 741 - the next bit - thanking us for our support, was always drowned out with hoots of laughter and derision.

Used to have a £1 each bet between our little gang on what the attendance would be announced as, nearest was the winner and pocketed a nice little £20 or so. Ground would be rammed and 28k would be official attendance. #GoodTimes lollollol

Fair enough, even though you never saw either of those teams in the flesh.
I was only 6 years old when I seen the 1963 team for a few games but I had a massive scrapbook aged 6 years old -I always go by Colin Harvey who was around in 1963 - 1969/70 and then assisted as a coach in the famous 1980s winning teams - for pure football he chose the 1970 title team as in his opinion we won it with a midfield trio and not a four man midfield - but also in consideration was the competition at the time plus the pitches - all different eras etc imo its a very hard one to judge, on paper the HK team won far more honours, but maybe I am leaning towards Co;ins assessment, that the Holy Trinity were so special the football was just classier played on mud bath pitches too?

I may be wrong here guys but if I remember correctly in the days of Westie in goal the players got a bonus for if the crowd was 40 thousand +. I read this somewhere that Gordon was always asking Labs how is the crowd looking.

The 68 Cup FInal skewed it a bit as well, if that had been won it would have given the team a lift in terms of gravitas. I do agree that the late sixties the competition was immense.
