Would you sell Jelavic?

I love how there is no middle ground with some fans, a player is either "boss" or "gash", it's hilarious.

Back to Jelavic, second season syndrome personified, not a terrible year, just very average after so much expectation. If it was a school report then his performance would read "must do better".

See how he does next season, if he doesn't improve then I wouldn't be sad to see him go.

Are you seriously suggesting that he's played well this season? He hasn't even been average to expectation. He's been badly badly below average.

Think you'll find it's all contextual.

A player who is up front for a team with a midfield of Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Ramires, and Luiz should be scoring more than 6 goals in 32 games. That goal scoring record is 1 goal every 5. Gash.

A player who is playing for the best team in the country and only scores 1 goal in 26 appearances is gash.

Not seeing the need for a middle ground.

For much of the season he has struggled to stand upright or use his foot to make contact with the ball. It's been beyond 'a little below average'.

I still don't know which one the real Jela is, last season or this. The only way to find out is to play him next season. Can we afford to take that risk though? I don't think so.

Yeah...

1 goal in every 5 games for a team in our position is not 'average', it's woeful. Even Big Vic has done better than that.

You've abandoned Jelavic a bit sharpish haven't you? Take a look at your OTT posts from when he was on fire and compare them to your current attitude - there's a big difference.

You're just desperate to claw back some respectability after saying he'd be worse than Beattie lad. He's already scored more than James, for the record.

I tend to judge players on their performances, not predefined notions of their ability based on league of origin combined with utter s***e.

Last season he was boss, this season he hasn't been. It's that simple.

You can only judge people on how they play Dave.

Its wrong to do anything else, when he was on fire he was on fire, slotting for fun, so ofc course he will get praise.

At the moment, he cant run, with or without the ball, he cant control 5 yard passes and he certainly cant shoot.

So of course people are gonna pick up on that.

Common sense.

Nice try Davek.

I wrote something last year about how heitinga and jelavic were two of only four players good enough for a CL club.

Sometimes you can get a false reading of a player if under or over performs. I think it's madness to ignore last years form entirely, but it's also mad to ignore this year's form. Judging a player on how they're currently playing is not as idiotic as it's sometimes made out by the 'class is permanent' lot.

Oh yeah, I agree. I was pickign Brennan up on it in particular because he was merciless with me when he felt I'd made a monumental error of judgement on Jelavic.

Seems you missed the point then. I and many others were mocking your proclamations that he was destined to be an awful player and that he'd be worse than James Beattie. For the record:

Jelavic - 56 games - 19 goals
Beattie - 86 games - 15 goals
