World Cup memories

I know Mexico only got the 1986 world cup at relatively short notice (supposed to be Colombia but economic reasons ended that). And they had their own problems with an earthquake 8 months before the finals. But why were all matches played during daylight hours??? From memory not one was played under lights.

possibly due to the time difference to Europe?

Ie night time matches there would be in the middle of the night here and hardly watched?

My earliest memory would be Ireland beating Italy 1-0 at USA 94

I don't remember much of the match, just the goal and the result

France 98 was the first World Cup where I watched most of it and knew what was going on. My highlights from that were Croatia knocking out Germany and Bergkamp's goal against Argentina

For 2002, England beating Argentina was really enjoyable for me because it was sweet revenge for 1998, and also the perfect story arc for Beckham, especially as Simeone tried to put him off before he took the penalty. Keane's last minute equaliser against Germany was also pretty awesome

For 2006, it'd probably be the final, which was rich with drama. It's probably the World Cup I've watched the least to be honest, as I was working through most of it so missed a lot of matches

For 2010, has to be Germany stuffing Argentina and the fantastic Holland/Uruguay semi final. Both great games. Slovakia knocking out Italy was also an amazing World Cup moment

For 2014, 7-1

saw that again recently. Didn't realise it was pochettino who 'fouled' Owen for the penalty

I think Cameroon scoring in the first minute of the first game for me is the ultimate memory. Plus IIRC, it was a morning kick off before school? (For me) or after school maybe.

pretty sure after... Remember rushing home from school to watch it. Some shocking fouls in that game. Remember one tackle that threw the Argentinean player in the air, taking his boot off in the process

if that was the infamous Massing (edit: RIP by the way) foul on Cannigia, it was his own boot

also the Argentines were as dirty as Cameroon were in that game, as the foul that gives the free kick away that Omam-Biyik scores from shows:

anything to do with this man, one of the few who matches big nev for on and off the field bossness, throw in an incredibly cool name and a languid style and you have my favourite footballer of all time

My first memory was the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. I remember the brilliant Brazil team and that incredible Gordon Banks save from Pele.
I used to get my Dad to get petrol from the Esso garage as you got World Cup coins for every gallon purchased and managed to get all 30 coins.
Also remember the World Cup record was Back Home with the B side of Cinnamon Stick. Brilliant tunes to a 9 year old.

I remember the '82 world cup and not being able to beat Spain in that weird second group stage thing - Keegan missing a sitter and England basically being eliminated unbeaten in the competition..

There is a picture of the ex Russian goalkeeper Yasmin, on the BBC news website, it looks like it was taken at GP. Did he ever play there ? the old memory is not like it used to be.

Weirdly, I remember the coins, but not the World Cup. But I was only 5. Dad coming back to the car with not only some Green Shield Stamps, (Google it kids), but a coin with a mans head on it to boot was the dogs for a 5 year old in 1970.
