World Cup memories

...Mexico World Cup in 1970 and that Brazilian team.Proberly the best international side I've ever seen, and I'll tell you what Eggs the England side was a great team and should've gone further in the tournament than they did, Banks food poisoning Bonetti in goal and all that went on all a bit fishy to me. And on a side note what a player Bobby Moore was.

..absolutely @Nobby Nobbs. Charlton going off in the West Germany game was pivotal. Beckenbaur still says he couldn’t believe it but Ramsey thought the game was won and was saving his best player.

First one I actually remember watching was West Germany, 1974.

And the main memory isnt the Cruyff turn, nor Muller scoring in the final. Not even the Dutch "Total Football" malarky. Way too young to appreciate any of that.

It was Jack Taylor reffing the final. And blowing for full time when a corner was on its way into the box. (Might have been the final, but not sure).

Yeah the Charlton sub was pivotal, can still see the reaction of Labone as the ball sailed over Bonetti's head, a look of disbelief, I'm sure I read somewhere that Pele said to Moore after their game "see you in the final ".

Load's of great memories of 1966 at Goodison.

I was only a kid, but me and my mates would head up to the ground to soak it all up.

Managed to get a ticket for Portugal v North Korea, in the upper Bullens, and I remember it being a lovely warm day.

The weather was better in the 60's though.

..yep, they only beat us 1-0 in what was their closest game of the tournament. Brazil had very special footballers but they also formed a very special team, which is not always the case. Certainly the best international team I have seen by some distance.

David Beckham scores from a free kick for England against Colombia in this Group G match played at the Stade Felix-Bollaert, Lens, France. Attendance: 38,100. England beat Colombia 2-0 and the match was played on June 26th 1998.

My first WC memory...USA 94...

Alexi Lalas ginger mane. Coked up Maradona's last. Dina Ross penalty miss. Ray Houghton wonder strike and everyone was Irish. Baggio. Romario. Hagi. Bebeto.

Decent.

Don't remember 1998 to be honest, was too young.

2002 was my first. I remember my primary school opened up breakfast club early so that kids could go in to watch it in the early hours before lessons, I went in and sat with my year 3 teacher and when Ronaldinho make a show of Seaman I remember looking up at Mr McRae and he looked more angry that I'd ever saw him.

2006 was decent, was on holiday when it first started and remember getting laughs and pats on the back by people watching it in the hotel bar for calling some Paraguayan player a fudge packer (was only 11 and heard it off one of the other guests). Was at a friend's barbecue when we went out on penalties, I remember one bloke who was also there got so annoyed he went out and sat in the garden for half and hour and everyone had to leave him alone.

2010 was the worst one by far because of those awful vuvuzelas which made it impossible to enjoy watching the games on TV. Watched the Germany game in the pub with my brother and we were sat on a table right next to two young lads who were talking over the game trying to pull two older women, both of whom had to be least 50. Felt more sick witnessing that than I did the disallowed goal.

2014 was boss I thought. Honestly didn't care about England and only watched our first game and that was mostly just to witness Pirlo being utterly boss. Was cheering for Holland throughout it and that Van Persie header is one the best and most dramatic goals I've ever seen. Didn't watch the Brazil-Germany game but I remember checking my phone and seeing what had occurred and laughing hard, really didn't want Brazil to win it. Suarez acting like Dracula sticks out in my mind too, God I hate him and feel he's a detestable human being. Listening to kopites as they again tried to defend his indefensible actions made for more great entertainment.

Hopefully this World Cup makes for good viewing and we see some boss performances, epic goals and a fair bit of drama. Also no unsavoury incidents or racism either but both of those sadly seem inevitable but hopefully not. I'm again not really bothered about how England do and no one should expect much from a side managed by Gareth Southgate. Think the team I'll be supporting is Portugal, loved how they managed to win Euros despite being a one man team that just defends. An underdog victory is always nice to see.

I think it was 1978 in Argentina.

Before the games and at half time they had little kids on the pitch showing off their ball skills.
I was about the same age as them and was ok at footy, but seeing them made me realise how far behind we were.
It was almost like some of them had the ball glued to their feet.

Before the days of saturation media and Europes top clubs hoovering up all the young talent, we used to watch world cups and see absolute boss players that we had never even heard of, let alone seen them play.

1982 Spain World Cup remains my favourite of all time.
I was 3 cards from completing my panini sticker album(quite an achievement)
Zico, Rossi, Zoff, Boniek, Platini, Rummenigge, Six, Eder, Falcao, Tigana, Socrates...to name but a few, all in their pomp.
Boss theme tunes from BBC and ITV.

The most exciting Brazil team I've ever seen. Some of the best goals I've ever seen. Schumacher nearly removing Battiston's swede...
And who can forget this. Remains to this day my most iconic World Cup memory ever...

Anyone who disagrees about this being the best World Cup ever, is just wrong, so don't bother...

I don't remember the tournament, being only 4 at the time. But I do remember seeing football, or anything for that matter, in colour on the tele for the first time.
My auntie went to Corfu for a fortnight, and she lent us her colour tele to watch the World Cup. I was gutted when we had to give it back.
