World Cup memories

A bit recent and a bit American centric, which are two things I don't like to do.

But Jermaine Jones goal vs Portugal in 2014. Just a thing of beauty... and probably luck. But I loved the way that guy played football. I usually just root for Germany because of my ancestry and well... The US sucked most of my life, but watching that 2014 cup was so fun. Granted the German influence on the squad helped. This is going to be a bitter sweet world cup for me

My earliest memory would be Ireland beating Italy 1-0 at USA 94

I don't remember much of the match, just the goal and the result

France 98 was the first World Cup where I watched most of it and knew what was going on. My highlights from that were Croatia knocking out Germany and Bergkamp's goal against Argentina

For 2002, England beating Argentina was really enjoyable for me because it was sweet revenge for 1998, and also the perfect story arc for Beckham, especially as Simeone tried to put him off before he took the penalty. Keane's last minute equaliser against Germany was also pretty awesome

For 2006, it'd probably be the final, which was rich with drama. It's probably the World Cup I've watched the least to be honest, as I was working through most of it so missed a lot of matches

For 2010, has to be Germany stuffing Argentina and the fantastic Holland/Uruguay semi final. Both great games. Slovakia knocking out Italy was also an amazing World Cup moment

For 2014, 7-1

I think football is generally a lower standard right now, is there even a top class club side in europe that club live with the sides around that era, the prem is utterly hideous

I don't think its the standard as such, more the over saturation of the game.

I used to love World Cups and Euros because you got to see these romanticized almost mythical players who you only got to see every 2-4 years (unless you happened to watch Sgorio on S4C..) You would be dying to watch Brazil to see Zico and Socrates, the great French team with Giresse, Platini, Tigana and Fernandez etc. Players who you would barely ever see so it felt like a cant miss event.

These days you see these players every single week, you know who they are. I remember when Angola qualified a few years back and I thought "Oh great a totally unknown team" and then was dismayed to find that half the team was plying their trade in League One etc.

Even the colour of the World Cup has gone now with the kit marketing. A couple of years ago half the teams had the same Puma shirt just in different colours, teams playing in away kits for no reason, its just all a bit rubbish. I miss poorer nations turning up with a goalie who was wearing a T shirt with his name written on the back in marker pen...

So yeah I would say the talent levels (or athleticism I suppose) is higher than it was in the past but there is no craft any more. No romance. A bunch of robots who go out to win at all costs without any real charm.

Modern football is rubbish.

(I'll still watch it like..)

The first one I watched was Mexico ‘86. Most of us at school had the sticker album so that helped build up the anticipation as we got used to all the exciting new players we’d get to see. It was great knowing there would be footy on pretty much every day for a month, and it was a real thrill seeing the likes of Brasil play for the first time, having read all about their legendary players.

The England team had about four Everton players as starters, and after a slow start, they really got going. Loved seeing Lineker score his hattrick against Poland, complete with bandaged arm. Then he got a couple against Paraguay, and it was on to that infamous QF against Maradona and co. I liked England back then, so it was a proper letdown. Finally gave up on them after the 2004 Euros, which was the one that ensured we had no chance of keeping Wayne Rooney.

The History channel is showing loads of good documentaries right now about past world cups.

Good viewing.

Also showed 'One night in Turin' last night, so it'll be on again in case anyone's not seen that, it's ace.

Oddly enough, the press acted like tits during that build up too..

I think Cameroon scoring in the first minute of the first game for me is the ultimate memory. Plus IIRC, it was a morning kick off before school? (For me) or after school maybe.

They have the 1986 World Cup film “Hero”. I remember getting that for Christmas when I was 6 and watching it non stop. Massive blast from the past

Earliest world cup memories are watching 86 on TV. The static muffled commentary and crowd explosions as goals went in. The volume seemed to crackle. Those nets that seemed so deep. The giant spider shadow. That Denmark kit. Negrete getting his hair pulled. The France v Brazil quarter final. And of course Maradona.

4 years later as a 10 year old, my dad took me and my brother to Italy for a month. He was only in his 30s and just told our mum he phone every so often with updates! He secured a hand full of match tickets through the FAI. He called into their Dublin office to pick up his Ireland group match tickets and by a stroke of luck happened to be greeted by some office temp. As he was paying for his tickets she asked did he need anything more? He joked and said yeah tickets for the final too! She then pulled out some box marked "finale". He walked out with 6 world cup final tickets, 3 for the semis and a few knock out rounds.

She probably got the sack for handing those over!

We spent a month travelling between Sicily, Naples, Genoa and Rome. Sleeping in campsites, overnight trains and overcrowded hotel rooms (we once smuggled 6 lads into a twin room in Rome - had to leave via the fire escape in the morning). We were at all the Irish games bar the first v England. Also got to a number of others including Argentina v Romania/Brazil/Italy and that Cameroon v Colombia madness with Higuita. Oh and the final which was in truth a bad game. But the memories will live forever. We still talk about it to this day and it cemented my love of football. Was watching "the road to Turin" on the history channel today and spotted our flag in the aftermath of David O Learys winning penalty when the place went nuts.

With all the corporate and sponsor influence nowadays and the general corruption of fifa itself, I don't think tournaments will be like that anymore. Where people travelled on a whim and somehow got to games on a shoestring. Best time of my life.
