William Carvalho

Gana - Carvalho - Gylfi is decent enough on paper.

However, I do feel Gana is too limited on the ball so we'd need to look to play Davies/Klaassen (a new signing if he goes) there in some games, to try and add a bit more attacking impetus.

Which, in fairness, is just fine and just how a balanced squad should be used.

I assume Gana would shield the defence and Willi play ahead of him . Gana is useless with his distribution but great at breaking up pay.

Schneiderlin is lightning fast at moving into positions where noone can pass to him.
I've no knowledge of Carvalho but I'd say 26 is far too old to be signing a player who isn't proven at PL level (or German etc.). Brands has already said that it's about spending money wisely. I suspect that translates to a mix of
1. Racing certainty (can that be said of Carvalho, especially given recent experiences we've had with Klassen etc?)
2. Young, fast, potential, worth a punt.
The reputations of both Silva and Brands are on the line here. This is the job that confirms Silva as the talented young coach that has now come of age in a big club or confirms that he flattered to deceive. Brands can make a name for himself throughout Europe in this job or provide further proof that anything coming from the Dutch league must be looked at with caution.

Their transfer activity this summer is crucial for them which makes me doubtful about the signing of James Maddison for big money when we are being far more accountable about the money we spend this summer.

I think they will go with players they know well and will know what they can get from them. Silva will know how fast or slow Carvalho is and having managed in the Premiership he should know if Carvalho can survive there.

If we sign players that have a very good season and we as a club have a good season the Brands/Silva will be in a much stronger position to take some risks when signing players in future windows.

He isn't useless with his distribution. As a give and go footballer he is fine. His passing isn't brilliant thats all but the way we have set up the past few years has basically forced him to be everywhere in midfield including far up the pitch trying to do defence splitting passes etc which obviously is not his game.

Which is why I said what I said. It is much more suited to Willi than gana, who is better of used as a shield.

So lemme get this straight. We generally despise Schneiderlein because of his lack of effort but are willing to excuse someone jogging back even MORE lackadaisical because he "lacks pace"?

Couldn't we try, I dunno, "improve" our athleticism?

It's one instance.

Judging him on that is like assuming Martina is a boss player due to his wonder goal for Southampton a few years back.

The manager knows him and obviously trusts him. Maybe we should give the manager the benefit of the doubt on this one?

You obviously didn’t hear what silva said about his number 6 and how that position is important to how he sets his team up. That player as well as being able to protect the back 4 needs to dictate the play from deep. And and bring the ball forward. And be an excellent passer of the ball.

Gana can’t do this , so won’t be in the holding role, number 6 position. Imo gana will last 12 months under silva, not good enough to play one of the advanced midfield roles.

He also played every match in the 2016 Euros, bar the semi-final, when he was suspended.
As has been said previously, a lack of mobility isn't necessarily an issue as long as he can read the game well enough.

yES, THIS IS WHAT i AM TRYING TO SAY. gANA WILL PLAY AS i CANNOT SEE WE WILL GET 2 dm'S IN. (AARRRGH CAPS)

If he cannot dictate play, which he cannot, I assume he will be used as a shield. Either that or he is sold.

Some good forward passing here. Shields the ball well and can move with the ball at his feet.
Of course it's a highlight reel and doesn't prove he can do it in the premiership but you know, for a balanced argument.

I know thats a highlights video like, but, you can see why he is rated as a 6. very rarely gets forward breaks the play up, shields the ball well and has a surprising range of passing - which I didn't realise! Some of them long balls out to the wing where boss, could see that to Walcott/Lookman or potentially a Martins/Lozano

I dont think he is as slow as people think, but I would be much more comfortable with him playing the 6 then Schniederat....

The accuracy of his long forward balls surprised me too. They weren't just hopeful punts. Obviously they won't always come off but he likes and has the ability to put the opposition under threat with it, which we lack at the moment.
Plus he does barge past a player too as his ball control and size are impressive. I think he would be an upgrade personally but with the caveat of being untested in our league.
Also some of those pitches were large and Goodison is tight'ish which may impinge his passing range but he's certainly looks a more complete player than either Snoozelin or Gana.

Im in the same boat. Had i not seen that clip Id be pumpes for Willy C, but now Id rather we go for someone else.
We always go on about the dangers of buying players based on 10 minute youtube videos. But this is the first case I've seen of NOT buying a player based on a 20 second video.

The player could have been feeling ill or anything. Somebody said he was substituted at half time which could maybe point to this.

Everyone knows he isn't the quickest of players. But his positioning and reading of the game more than make up for that and he is an automatic choice for both club and country. His teams, whether that be club or country, have fantastic defensive records when he is in the team.

Not sure whether we're interested or if he'll fit into our new preferred system, but to suggest he's not good enough for us is a bit silly in my opinion.

The thing about long balls is that, when you have just one player in the opposing half of the pitch like we've done for the last 12 months, then it becomes a hoof. I'm sure that will change under Silva.

The important thing here is that Carvalho has the vision and ability to turn defence into attack very quickly, something the likes if Gana and Schneids do not possess.
