We have (it seems)
  • an extremely well respected DoF
  • a young manager who has managed the player before
  • two previous managers who kept a close eye on the player, one of which seemingly made an offer.
We also have a sizeable number of experts who post here stating he's too slow and crap.

Can anybody suggest which set of experts have the worthwhile experience and actual knowledge of what makes a good player?

Rather play Beni.

Don't get me wrong, he looks classy and can pass but he moves like a fridge.

Yes because he's completely proved himself at the top level. Definitely a far better option than an international player with vast experience in domestic and European competition.

That's not a slight on Beni by the way. He doesn't move like a fridge, I'll grant you that. We don't however know if he's "classy" as opposed to "promising."

International football is weird though.

Brian Ruiz still looks like a player for Costa Rica.*

*he was one of their best players in qualifying...I will be sleeping during CR's first game...I will add Joel Campbell as well just for fun

Agree with you there, it throws up some odd players/performances that don't always translate to the Premier League.

Isn't he a free agent anyway now? Sure he'll cost us in signing on and wages but if he's a free and Silva and brands want him then why not.

Watched him for the first time against Spain when concentrating solely on his performance, and was surprised how much of the game passed him by. I think he only touched it twice in the first 20 mins having spent the whole time jogging round a 30 yard space in front of the back 4.

Spain and their midfield is probably the worst team to judge him against as they would make most players look lethargic.

After the first 20 his contribution did improve somewhat. When out of possession he patrols space rather than players denying that space to the oppisitiion. His positioning and reading of the game more than make up for his lack of pace. He has the vision and passing ability to turn defence into attack very quickly and in other games I've seen him control games when Portugal dominate possession.

He is clearly a very good player, extremely experienced and would allow Silva to play different formations were we to buy him.

Having said that, I don't think I've ever seen a less "Everton" type footballer. His one paced style is almost comical at times and the Goodison crowd will absolutely slaughter him. He will become the bext Osman/Barkely/Williams rolled into 1.

Hd will improve the team performance I've no doubt, but large sections of our crowd wont see that. They"ll just see the perceived lack of effort, even when we're doing well.

I hope we dont buy him. I'd rather we bought a btb type midfielder anyhow but this guy will end up slaughtered almost to the extent of ridicule if he came hete.

Think the main concern with this move is if he plays as the pivot he needs legs around him and pace. In a 3 gana would work, Davies possibly but there's little creativity there.

Also it poses the question where does gylfi play as we assume silva wants to play proper fast wingers. So lookman and Walcott.

You could play gylfi in the 3 in midfield but although he's not a slouch it's not the most mobile 3 and would put a lot of emphasis on gana doing all the ball winning.

Reckon doucoure or similar pacey box to box player would work better. Him and gana would rotate I.e one sits the other presses and gylfi can rotate between playing number 10 and dropping into a flat 3 depending on the offensive defensive flow of the game.

The experts on here of course and primarily our super expert @Zatara lol

Maybe I'm alluding to some doubts about it being another player we'll be paying top wages for.

Stung last summer. I'm over cautious.
