Ancelotti hasn't played with our strongest CM pair yet so think it's a little early to assume what he wants in that department.

Plus I'm trying to be as realistic as possible in terms of how much we'll have to spend. Like I reckon he'd maybe want a new keeper but it aint happening this Summer.
Who’s our strongest pair?

No its not really early, are you happy with any of our midfield options?

Gomes makes me jizz, but other than him the rest are badly lacking in REAL quality and we need somebody who knows how to pass a ball.

I thought that with Wan Bissaka, and I doubt I watch them as much as most people, but I did watch him at Anfield and in truth I was really underwhelmed. He got the absolute run around. He looked completely out of his depth. There's no shame in that in the abstract, but for a lad who has had 50 million paid for him, primarily for his defensive abilities I was underwhelmed.

There is probably a bit of the Jordan Pickford in there. He looked great in a poor team that had to do a lot of defending.

Whenever ive watched him hes a beast at the back, but I reckon Hibbert was better going forward.

Yeah I think BRANDS will have his eye on a CB, CM and RW of the highest possible quality, everything else will just be filler.

I think the filler may start to be more left field, younger players. That will be the hope anyway. By all accounts they tried to get a young left back from Italy. I think these are the sort of signings that will begin to really enhance Brands reputation.

Where he has been more sensible than Walsh (who tried similar signings from the start) is that he has waited to get himself established, build a rapport with a manager and get the team to a base level before introducing more risky purchases.

In theory, Gomes and Gbamin will be our best central midfield pairing. I firmly believe that was the plan this season. We have to see how Gbamin recovers from a long lay off but that will be the partnership we will want to see. The rest, I sense are doing a job for him.

I will get accused of making excuses by some, but 80+ transfers Brands has had to deal with in less than 2 years, they are just breathtaking numbers and there isnt even any light at the end of the tunnel, we still have around 15-20 surplus players and I dont even mean the likes of Snides, Walcott and that ilk that most want rid of.

I reckon my cat could have managed our money better than Walsh did, sure he signed some good players, but my God he made a mess that Brands is now having to clean up.

You have a squad, then you add some quality young players, currently we are struggling with the squad.

Gomes and JPG
But Gbamin is totally unknown at prem levelnand is starting again next season. Will him and Gomes be able to play 38 games. As I’m sure Gomes had injury issues at Barca.

Throw in cups and maybe Europa league and it could be 60. Relying on Davies & Delph as back up next season will be a disaster.

So I can see one coming in definitely, maybe even two, If they get rid of Davies and Brands/Ancelotti target a young midfielder with a much higher ceiling than Davies to come in as 4th choice.

Have you seen a midfield of Gomes and JPG under Ancelotti? No, so it’s early isn’t it.

You cant possibly say Gmblammo is our best midfielder, at this point we arent even sure if he will play again.

Yes. Easy 70m +

We have approx 15 players running out of contracts in the summer, which will free up a lot of wages and ease the pressure of FFP.

On top of this we will clearly have more player sales, possible one or two current big earners from the squad.

Most players cost a bomb these days so to be honest I could see us signing maybe 3-4 key players at 30m+ each

Think we only have the following who are over 23 and their contracts expiring in the summer;

BAINES
MARTINA
STEKLENBERG
SIDIBE
NIASSE
TARASHAJ
GARBUTT

Out of that lot there are probably; Baines, Sidibe and Niasse we need direct replacements for within the squad. And then on top of that I would say we need CM, RW and CB

But we don’t know if they’ll survive a full season? What if we sign a new midfielder and he’s out for the season like what happened with JPG? We can only work on what we’ve got and what we know not what might happen. Hence I think we’ll be smart with signings this summer.

Yes. There is a real difficulty in moving players on from England if they fail, as you can't sell them back to Europe. We haven't established ourselves as a top 6 team, so we don't really even have the fall back of selling to poorer PL teams. The problem is exacerbated by the fact we have at times, over paid on wages to get people here.

Brands has been more cautious in recruitment and this is a good thing. Overall the damage is being reduced year on year, though I accept not at the speed we would all like it to be.

This is a structural problem though. It's not just an Everton problem. Manchester United face it more acutely than we do. Lots of players on wages they just can't get out (Lingard being a prime one).

It means compromises have to be made. If Schneiderlin can recapture the early Koeman late Silva form we may have to accept him for 1 more year.

Brands isn't faultless, as few are in these situations, but overall he has made a good fist of it, and we are in a better place two years in in terms of the squad. We have lots of assets who have either grown in value or look set too, which is crucial for the club on a number of levels.
