Will Jelavic's 2012/13 surpass Yakubu's 2007/08?

Would be tricky, the Yak took a fair few pens as well that you have to take into account.

Id be happy with 15+, but wouldnt put it past him getting 20 especially now that he has a foil.

Id expect his conisitencey to drop of this year a bit though - almost impossible to keep up what he did last year.

Same with Cisse. People think "oh they did that in half a season so they'll do twice that in a full one".

It will be interesting to see how he copes with the inevitable barren spell. One thing I liked about Yakubu is that he was mentally strong and when he'd miss a sitter it wouldn't bother him.

He had a ropey Euros, and it's a different proposition sustaining form in the PL. I personally think his partnership with Cahill was a good one and he might miss it more than people realise. Naismith in the SPL with him is one thing, down here is a different matter entirely.

The thing i like with Jelavic which is overlooked a lot is hes brings others into play in very dangerous positions. His ball retention and distribution as well as footballing intellegence is excellent, we look a far more potent team overall and in midfield with him in it in a goalscoring sense. The Yak was dead eye, and a very good player but he rarely boosted the stats of those around him. If you compare our midfield stats in the second half of the season in terms of assists and goals - a lot of the team really improved with Jelavic in it, he also provideds brilliant penetration and distrabuiton. The triade between him, Mofro and Pienaar - stats wise and i guess on the eye as well - was as good as anything in the league in the second half of the season. The big question is can that be replicated over 38+ games - Jurys still out for me.

Davey will defo go with Fellaini in behind Jelavic for me, he loves his physicality - while both have great balance and engine to their game.

Id disagree with that mate, i thought it was awfull, for my money he played more games - certainly effectively with Fellaini in the just in behind attcaking role.

Some good points, but I really hope he doesn't. I think he will too but he's such a dominant defensive presence.

Perhaps we could have a versatile system though, with a midfield triangle of Fellaini/Gibson/Rodwell/Osman/Barkley/Pienaar etc in any game and them alternating. I'm not saying Fellaini should be a strict, deep-lying DM because he is useful all over the pitch, it would just be a shame to see Neville as our DM and Fellaini being our big grock target man, which could definitely happen.

Even when we had the Yak the team was set up for Cahill to shine. The yak was an unbelieveable finisher and was very, very similar to jelly bar a bit of mobility.

This time it appears Moyles has realised to be a true attacking threat you need to set your side up to take advantage of your biggest threat, that's jelavic.

The lads shown he's a goal machine. 44 goals in 47 touches says he's got it as a finisher.

If he's fit he's going to be scoring. If he's here long enough his name could go in the history books.

All the signs point to a Rodwell/Gibson middle two with Gibbo sitting and Jack having a box to box role with Naismith/Coleman on the right IMO.

I would to be honest mate. Id have Neville and Gibson starting in behind Mofro. Mofro is too good of a player to be shackled for me. Yes he offers physicality, and their is the crosees and long ball route, but he is a very underatted as a playmaker! His game is developing and this season i think we will see the evolution of him in terms of end product in the final third both in playmaking and in terms of goals and assists. I think we forget how young he is really. The Cahill sale and what he did at the end of the season was an indicator for me. It begs the question what will happen with Naismith - but then i dont really see Davey ever playing two up front and i see Davey wanting and liking whoever is playing in the hole to drop deep when under the kosh to play a midfield 5. Maybe right side as an inside forward but he may need to grow in that role - cant see him starting there - but he is a game boy who will take his chance once given.

As for Nev and Gibbo, despite the stick the former gets for his lack of creative influence in DM, he is a great man marker and defensive shield, i think he balances out Gibbo who is a good deep lying player but he is far more creative then people think - he will come on this year as well.

As for Rodwell and Barckley im all for them playing if they can dislodge those two - i think both should be given minutes maybe innitally in substiute roles - its important they earn there places though. Nevs performences in DM at the end of the season really went underestimated. He wont play 38 game either for me.

Christ it feels good to talk about football again!

Im gonna go out on a limb an say he wont score as many in the league for us next season as he did for US last season. I doubt he will get anyhwere near the Yak's total

Defenders will be more wise to him than they were but having a relatively unknown quantity next to him could help - neither Fellaini nor Naismith have played up front in the Premier League particularly often in the past. And as we know, Jelly only needs one touch.

I don't think he'll beat Yak's 07/08 totals, but there's no shame in that. Nobody has in the four years since or had in the fifteen previous. I don't think he'll be a mile away though. If he gets about 14 and Fellaini and Naismith contribute another 10 between them we'll be fine.
